Useable girls names outside the top 1000

I kept going through the ONS list and getting bored a few hundred into it so I decided to start at 1000 and make a list of real names. I've left out nicknames, misspellings, very foreign names and names that, to me, seem a bit made up.

I'm not looking for a critique on the list, I'm sure I've added some that you wouldn't, not added some that you would have and missed some. I just thought it would be useful for people looking for something really rare and also show people that you can pick a very, very underused name and it can still be perfectly straightforward to spell/pronounce.

They are in popularity order.

Awwww one of those names is mine

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 16/01/2014 21:34

Kind of makes me want another baby.

NOOOOOO

SS3J · 16/01/2014 22:02

This is really interesting. I too want a list for boys! OP, where did you find the list? I can only find one that goes up to the top 1000.

NancyinCali · 16/01/2014 22:23

My name is on this list :). I don't mind popular names and DD1's is way up the top of the charts. Our current favourite for DD2 is rising in popularity and I still love it. This list has given me food for thought though - thank you OP!

BananaHammocks · 17/01/2014 05:40

Got them from the ONS lists, there's an excel spreadsheet where you need to click on the 6th tab to get the list of ALL the names in popularity order (down to names given to 3 or more babies).

www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-reference-tables.html?edition=tcm%3A77-318071

Might do boys at the weekend if I can be bothered! I know I'm having a girl now so boys names are not of as much interest! For future reference though maybe!

I wonder how much influence the ONS list itself has on baby name popularity? I know quite a few people who used the top 100 list and a few who used the full list (incl me) to make baby name choices. an interesting example of statistics reporting influencing the very statistics being reported...

Thurlow · 17/01/2014 12:13

hawkmcqueen that is DD's name Smile We love it because it isn't overly popular - though if you add all the Alexandra, Alexa, Allie's together it's relatively popular - but it still sounds very familiar.

curiousgeorgie · 17/01/2014 17:30

My DD2's name is on that list, I was always worried people hated it (which they do!) but now I panic everytime I see it written that its going to get popular!

CinnamonSummer · 17/01/2014 19:25

Wow thanks op, that's a gorgeous list (or most of them!) I especially love Marianne, and it's interesting that quitea few pps do too. Only potential nns put me off using it.

A boys list would be amazing if anyone feels inclined... ;-)

MrsRV · 17/01/2014 20:15

love love love Bronwyn & Blythe but no way hubs will move from pretty girlie classic names. which all feature in top 20.

UriGeller · 17/01/2014 20:21

Dd is on your list, born this year. She's one of four so only just made it. I LOVE her name, LOVE it, can't stop saying it Grin

I like Rafaella especially.

Theonlyoneiknow · 17/01/2014 21:19

Whats her name URI?

Purplelooby · 17/01/2014 21:27

Thank you so much for this list! I love Marianne, Seraphina and Thora.

Nosied in the boys list and was really surprised to find DS's name within the top 1000 (just), I though it would be much less popular than this...

Lamu · 17/01/2014 22:09

Theres lots of really timeless names on there. Not sure I would use them all. I know an Octavia, she's in her mid 30's and gets constantly ribbed with the Skoda joke.

I Like;

Mara...definitely adding it to my short list
Dahlia
Luella...reminds me of the clothing label
Cosima
Raffaella

JanePurdy · 18/01/2014 09:52

I'm so surprised some of these names aren't top 1000 - like Susannah, it's such a beautiful name (I have a lovely friend by name of Susannah so maybe I am biased).

BillyBanter · 18/01/2014 10:04

My name is on there. Its one of those names that never seems to have had a popular era but there are always afew each year.

I've never really liked it.

toobreathless · 18/01/2014 16:40

I adore laurel & it would be very high up our list for a possible DD3. We almost used it for DD2 but it felt a bit 'matchy' with Hazel (DD1) so we went for Celeste instead.

Lancelottie · 18/01/2014 16:50

Surprised some of these are so out of fashion.

Mind you, DD's (fairly ordinary) school has all of these from your list -- several of them sisters:
Lucinda
Seraphina
Susan
Octavia
Winifred
Bridie
Celine
Susannah
Clarissa
Persephone
Bronwen
Danica
Blythe
Clemency
Christian[i]a
Pandora
Shona
Atlanta [in the same class as Georgia, which makes me chuckle]
Cosima

and we also know
Beulah
Rowena
Morwenna
Kirsten [x about 5!]

LittleMissLidl · 19/01/2014 00:33

Ooo, the name I desperately wanted to use (Ramona) and the compromise name we both liked so used (Petra) are on there. I still dream of a little Ramona one day

lechers · 19/01/2014 10:18

Like Lancelottie,

If you chose one of those names to be different, at my DDs school, you may well find yourself disappointed! 9 of those names (at least) already belong to children at my daughters' average sized primary (200 kids), yet there is not a single Holly at that school (top 50 when my DD1 was born). At my DDs school, the fashion is for slightly different middle class names, so there are several boys called Hugo (ranked 88) for example, but not a single Charlie (ranked 4th).

In our wider circle of children we know (through extra curricular activities and friends' children), I could scrub off another 10 names from that list!

UriGeller · 19/01/2014 10:22

Born last year not this. Theonlyone I couldn't possibly say!

Theonlyoneiknow · 19/01/2014 10:55

Awww Boo!

Seminyak · 19/01/2014 19:57

Aww all my fave names for potential future dd are on there :) hope they don't get too popular!

KiwiBanana · 19/01/2014 20:03

Thanks OP! Love some of them :)
