a feminine nickname for Alexandra

We have a little Alexandra and we (the family) always call her by her full name. But a lot of people call her Alex, which I really dislike. We're French and in France nicknames are less common, so we didn't think about the nickname problem!
Any suggestions for a nice feminine nickname? My older children suggested Lily - would it be too contrived? What about Alix?

Sandy

Lexie. Or Sandy?

Alix will sound just like Alex, so if you hate Alex, there's no point.

Slainte · 04/01/2014 17:28

Don't Alix and Alex sound the exact same? I like Lexi.

PuppyMonkey · 04/01/2014 17:28

Lexie
Xandra
Sandy

BunnyLebowski · 04/01/2014 17:29

No idea how usable any of these would be in French but:

Lex
Lexi
Ali
Xandra

Alix is nice too Smile

Sasha. I know it doesn't sound at all like alexandra, but it honestly is the Russian nickname for Alexander

Artandco · 04/01/2014 17:31

Or saskia

BunnyLebowski · 04/01/2014 17:31

Sasha is fab!

NorthernLebkuchen · 04/01/2014 17:33

I love Alix. It's not the same as A-LEX. It's A-LICKS. You could try Alicky as well if that appeals? A-LICK-EE

FrumiousBandersnatch · 04/01/2014 18:07

Came in to suggest Sasha too.

badtime · 04/01/2014 18:35

Northern, most people pronounce Alex and Alix the same, even if it's typed in all caps - the vowel is usually a schwa rather than a strong e or i sound.

I teach a couple of Polish Aleksandras and their nicknames have both been Ola. Not sure where that comes from though.

Alexa is lovely. I know a couple of stand-alone Alexas, don't see why it can't be short for Alexandra though.

Thanks for your responses so far! I must admit I'm not a fan of Lexi either and I love the full name...

My brother is Alexander, and his nicknames are Alex, Al, Lex (luthor when he's being annoying), Ali (baba and the 40 thieves when i'm feeling silly)... usually Al.

My friends sister is Alexandra. Her nickname is Alex and all manner of other weird childhood specific things to do with her last name, or her hobbies.
