Amelie or Amalie

Just that. Which spelling is better? We have loved Amelia but it's my cousins 11yo daughters name so although we're not close, we are starting to move on to Amelie but can't agree on spelling! Middle name will be Kate

Amelie definitely

As long as you ok with Amelia / Amelie being really popular loads round here. Doesn't bother some people but would put me off both names two a penny.

badtime · 15/12/2013 20:48

Amelie is the better of the two.

A lot of people would probably think 'Amalie' was a misspelling or a yooneek spelling, rather than a variant of the entirely different name Amalia (which I prefer to either name).

I would pronounce them differently, by the way.

Thebuttonfancier · 15/12/2013 21:14

Amelie definitely. Not sure if you know this though as I only just discovered it (via my SIL to be who is French) when we were discussing names... but in France Amelie is actually pronounced Emily just as we do here. There actually is no such name as Amelie pronounced with an "a". That said, either are beautiful names so you should pick whichever you love!

ANormalOne · 15/12/2013 22:13

I like Amalie, but then my daughter is called Amalia Wink

GW297 · 15/12/2013 22:13

Amelie

JemR234 · 15/12/2013 22:15

Amelie - but I like Amalia too.

IHaveSeenMyHat · 15/12/2013 22:17

Amalie looks misspelled, so definitely Amelie.

Lurkymclurker · 15/12/2013 22:38

Amalie, but then I have an Emilia Wink

MarEl · 16/12/2013 02:15

Definitely Amelie. As in the film Amelie. I think it the French accent, rather than it not beginning with an 'ah' sound.

EirikurNoromaour · 16/12/2013 10:02

Amalia is nicer than Amelie which is very dated IMO.

Haahoooo · 16/12/2013 11:00

Amelie or Amalia I would say. Amalie looks a bit like a misspelling to me.

TheBunsOfPanettone · 16/12/2013 16:07

Amelie or Amalia definitely!

allyfe · 16/12/2013 23:06

Amelie - agree that it looks mis-spelt. My favorite name is Aurelie. Like Amelie, but because it isn't associated with the film, more timeless in my view. But my daughter has a name that would date, so go with whatever you love :)

allyfe · 16/12/2013 23:07

I should have said it looks mis-spelt as Amalie! I wasn't at all clear!

MrsChristmasBungle · 16/12/2013 23:08

Amelie - I agree that Amalie looks mis-spelt.

Cariad007 · 17/12/2013 17:13

I have a niece called Amali (emphasis on the second syllable) and I think it's lovely and unusual. It isn't a "yooneek" spelling, it's a Sinhalese name.
