What do I think? I'm sure the family will be delighted that you are posting this on Mn.

bundaberg · 04/12/2013 21:45

i know a little Alan, his brother is Eric

Umlauf · 04/12/2013 21:53

I love it. My DS has what is often referred to as an old man name but Alan makes me smile, it's retro in a different way.

It's cute. I felt the same way when I heard about a little boy called Frank. Love it!

BunnyLebowski · 04/12/2013 22:00

I love Frank. It has retro charm and cool appeal.

Alan and Roy, sadly, just do not.

There was a baby Brian in DD's nursery last year. It took me a while to get used to that one!

Umlauf · 04/12/2013 22:09

Frank and Ray were on my list! It's funny how Ryan can be so popular but Brian not (although i've met a few baby Brians here in Spain!) There seems to be a trend in Spain at the moment for retro English names Grin

There was also a Spanish baby Colin on the ward when DAy was born but not so keen on that somehow...

There is a boy in our school called Kevin. He is 4 and oh so cute. It really suits him! Didn't Sophie Ellis bextor name her baby Ray? Another old man name.

BunnyLebowski · 04/12/2013 22:10

Grin Grin at baby Colin!

If this baby is a boy he'll more than likely be Frank. It was my granda's name and I just love it. Simple yet completely badass Smile .

SilverSixpence · 04/12/2013 22:13

I met a baby Harold the other day, I suppose it will get shortened to Harru tho

Rosencrantz · 04/12/2013 22:22

Is my late grandfathers name. I want to use is desperately, I love it so much.

Rosencrantz · 04/12/2013 22:23

Love Brian and Colin too!

Other grandad is Barry!

out2lunch · 04/12/2013 22:24

ahh bunny it was my dgf name love it :)

DziezkoDisco · 04/12/2013 22:25

Oh I predicted this about 10 years ago...and now it is happening. Baby Sheila, maureen, and Janet will soon follow...

NorbertDentressangle · 04/12/2013 22:29

I know a 2yo Ray whose siblings have really cool names so Ray, to me, is also cool IYSWIM. Frank is also cool (especially Frankie).

Alan, Kevin and Colin have a little while longer before they become cool in my eyes though!

squoosh · 05/12/2013 02:31

Ray works, Roy doesn't.

Sorry Roy but vowels are fickle things.

Youarejustwordsonascreenpeople · 05/12/2013 03:00

My DH is an Alan and my best friend is a Roy.

I also of know various Roy's and Alan's in the school where I work. I work in admissions and the school goes from nursery to 18 years old, with a roll of 2000 pupils.

itsnothingoriginal · 05/12/2013 11:48

Al is a great nn

Makes a change from all the Charlie's, Archies and Harry's (lovely names but lots of them around!)

I'll raise an eyebrow if Derek, Keith and Norman come back into vogue..

ladymia · 05/12/2013 12:39

I can't decide if it's retro or dated

nonmifairidere · 05/12/2013 15:46

Worlds better than Apollo, Wulfric or the abominable Zephyr. Proper unpretentious boys' names.

tallulah · 05/12/2013 16:05

There was a card read out a few weeks ago on Cbeebies for 3 yo Trevor. My DS said WTF?! (he is 26)

I think Alan is a great name.

The only reason it isn't popular now is because it was popular 40-60+ years ago. Otherwise it would be very very popular today. Short name, vowels sounds, easy nickname and ending with a popular -n sound.

It will definitely come back in fashion at some time.

EvilTwins · 06/12/2013 22:02

I teach a 12 yr old Alan. Also have a friend called Alan (39) who I've known since school and work with a lovely Alan who has recently retire. Perhaps it never really went away...
