Matilda, Lara, Anna or Iris

I like Matilda but concerned its very popular (although only one at dd1 and dd2's school).
The other dds have four letter names so Iris and Lara would follow that trend.
DH likes Anna best.

Lara is wonderful...I know none. Matilda needn't be Tilly. The one I know is Matty. But could be Tilda....or not shortened at all. Anna is classic. Iris is meh.

PrammyMammy · 04/12/2013 19:33

Anna.

peggylane · 04/12/2013 19:35

According to the latest most popular baby names 2013 poll on BabyCenter Matilda is 39th and Anna 40th most popular name so not a huge difference with regards to overall popularity it seems. I do think it's such a subjective thing if a name is popular or not, there's only one Matilda in my daughter's school but 3 Laras and 2 Annas....
I love Matilda, Anna and Iris but not so keen on Lara for some reason...Go for Matilda if you like it, don't worry about popularity, nationwide it doesn't seem over popular to me (yet).

Love Lara and Matilda. Anna seems a bit dull to me (yes yes, I know, classic) and really dislike Iris. Iris is the most likely to date horribly, IMO.

DrHolmes · 04/12/2013 19:53

Love Iris. But that's cause my brother's fiancee is an Iris and she is lovely. Everyone compliments her on her name.

DramaAlpaca · 04/12/2013 19:54

Anna & Lara are both lovely.

laraeo · 04/12/2013 19:56

Did someone call?

Thing with Lara is you will get a variety of pronunciations. Not a big deal but people often want it to be Laura.

The only other people I know with my name were born around the time the Dr. Zhivago film was released.

Mattissy · 04/12/2013 20:17

Anna
Iris
Matilda

Lara

natandmat · 04/12/2013 20:30

I have a Matilda and she is never known as Tilly by anyone! Which is a good job as I loathe it!

Bowlersarm · 04/12/2013 20:34

Anna or Lara, both lovely.

Matilda

Iris

Onesliceortwo · 04/12/2013 20:42

We have an Anna! It's a lovely name and suits all personalities. It can't be shortened and there are very few of them about. Good luck!

IHaveSeenMyHat · 04/12/2013 20:42

I absolutely love Iris. As flower names go it's really unusual but still beautiful.

I like Lara. Matilda is ok, but popular. Anna is a bit plain.

Tillyscoutsmum · 04/12/2013 20:45

I love Matilda (obviously!). There are no others in her school. I know of one other irl and she is only ever known as Mathilda (not Tilly)

Tillyscoutsmum · 04/12/2013 20:46

Oh and Anna is my second favourite on your list. Lara has bad personal connotations for me but I don't suppose it's a bad name. Iris I'm just not personally keen on.

Iwillorderthefood · 04/12/2013 21:00

I know two Laras. It's a lovely name, but be prepared for your Lara to not be the only one.

laravh · 04/12/2013 21:09

I love seeing my name on these threads!! I love my name. Don't know any others, but it seems to be getting more popular.
i have to correct people quite often though, particularly Americans, who call me Laura even when I've corrected them!
Of your other names Matilda is my fave.
Anna is a bit plain and Iris just makes me think of old ladies. (i'm not one for the sudden resurgence of granny names.

Pidgy · 04/12/2013 21:17

Lara!
That's what we're planning on calling our DD due in Jan.

Is it really popular?! I didn't think so.

Funnily, also have Iris and Anna on the short list!

DavidHarewoodsFloozy · 05/12/2013 00:33

Anna every time.

southerngirl25599 · 05/12/2013 03:49

Lara is fab and I don't mind Matilda either. I think Anna is a bit 80s/90s and not keen on Iris

sleepingbeautiful · 05/12/2013 07:04

I love Iris, especially if your DD has any chance of being willowy. I know two, a glamorous great aunt, and a cute, quirky late 20something.
Anna annoys me that it sounds like Hannah with the H dropped.
Lara is ok but I prefer Zara, Cara, Tara and Mara.
Matilda is nice, solid name with good longevity, and girlie nn options.

CherryHaribo · 05/12/2013 19:32

Thanks all.
Lara seems to be winning out here, and Anna.
I just can't shake that Anna seems a bit dull, so Lara it may be.
