Difficult surname - help please!

Have nc'd so that I write my surname!

We have an awkward surname as in - it can sound a bit poncey apparently.

We don't know what we're having yet but we like:

George (I know, I know, but I've loved it forever)
William (as above)
For boys

And

Seren
Victoria (hate the nns though)
Savannah (this gets some negativity on here - can someone explain? I like Vannah for short)
Esme (meh)
Anna (DH says too plain)

So obviously I need your help! Our surname is w/i/n/d/s/o/r (trying and perhaps failing to make it unsearchable there!)

Anything you think that would go nicely? I'm sick to death of looking in names books!

I'd go for the overtly un-royal Oliver.

HenriettaTurkey · 03/12/2013 19:23

...or, if you like surnames as first names...Cromwell!

NicPen · 03/12/2013 21:28

Do not use anything royal sounding. Definitely not William, George or Victoria.

There are plenty of names you could use. It is just silly to use royal names imo.

Spaghettinetti · 04/12/2013 08:45

How about Alexander? Michael? Jonathan? Nathaniel? Or just Nathan? Or Jacob?

Bowlersarm · 04/12/2013 09:02

Sorry but you just can't have any current royal names. Your poor DC would have to live with it for the rest of his/her life.

I like Savannah, though. Victoria wouldn't necessarily be shortened,

saffronwblue · 04/12/2013 09:06

Thomas or Matthew sound good.
Emily or Susannah

MERLYPUSS · 04/12/2013 10:07

Not Victoria - se'd be a VW

HaleyDunphy · 04/12/2013 13:01

Have just shown this to DH who is shocked so many people are against George!

Tis a bit unfair that we have this name, I really love traditional names. However - thank you for the input as we would've committed a real faux pas otherwise!

We decided Theodore for a boy. I have no idea about a girls name.

What about something a little less traditional, like Lara? Would that work?

OP posts:
UmpireOnCall · 04/12/2013 13:13

Love Lara

MissMilbanke · 04/12/2013 13:17

Whats wrong with George ? sounds like a lovely combination.

Will Windsor isn't quite right thou…

All your girls names will work imo.

lljkk · 04/12/2013 17:54

If they chose George, He wouldn't be quite the only one, MissM. You know how dreary it is when your child doesn't have a unique name. So many copycats around. Wink

Kantha · 04/12/2013 18:58

Yay - you liked my suggestion of Theo/Theodore Smile

HaleyDunphy · 04/12/2013 19:13

Thank you Kantha!!

quietly that is what some of our friends have said! Incidentally, my name is the same as a living royal family member, though no one bothers to look at me twice Grin

RightInTheKisser · 04/12/2013 20:35

Theodore Sounds fab with your surname. Love it.

What about Martha?

HaleyDunphy · 04/12/2013 21:07

Martha is cute! Added to the list.

Still love George though. Gutted!

manicinsomniac · 04/12/2013 23:18

Actually, thinking about it, Savannah is a royal name too. And I guess she also has the royal surname. So I wouldn't go down that road either.

heidihole · 04/12/2013 23:24

I think you could go with George if you wanted.

For a girl something traditional but not in use by a prominent royal.

Charlotte
Victoria
Margaret (Maggie?)
Emily
Emma
Rachel
Rebecca
Sophie
Helen(a)

NotMyChashkaChai · 07/12/2013 22:27

I think the savannah in the royal family has the surname Philips. I still wouldn't personally go for it, but others may not make the connection.

Update - we found out today that we're having a girl. I had my heart set on a little Theodore (just because I LOVE that name) but will have to fall in love with a girl's name. Don't like Theodora.

Still like Lara but I'm not crazy about it...

Lydia is really nice too though. Gah, plenty of time but I suppose!
