What's your mum's name?

I met a five year old Jacky the other day. Same name as my mum.

Everyone's always so obsessed with naming babies after their nan's generation, but I reckon naming them after your parent's friends is much cooler.

Nigel, Mark, Colin, Mike
Jacky, Cheryl, Angela

yes - 'there was Mary Beaton, Mary Seaton, Mary Carmichael & me' - is that right?

Sounds about right. I read Antonia Fraser's biography of Mary years ago but have forgotten most of it. The 'Four Marys' stuck in my memory, though.

Janet is a name I have come 180 on. I used to dislike it as a child but now think it's immensely cool.

It's weird how names go around isn't it. My great grandmas were Hannah and Louise, they gave birth to Enid and Ivy who gave birth to Cheryl and Robert who named their kids things like Hannah and Louise, now Cheryl and Robert's kids generation are calling their kids things like Enid and Ivy.

I think the names Penny, Heather, Deborah, Ruth, Jacqueline, Dianne, Karen, Lisa, Pamela will have a resurgence eventually

Greg, Lawrence, Jeremy, Russell and the like for boys

My mum is Ellen and I know a 4yo Ellen and another one with it as a middle name. Aunties include Virginia (the others are boring, lots of Janes!)

We also know a Lesley (and that IS the correct female spelling), Janet, Beryl (older though), Jessie (also old enough to be my granny).

My Mum is Helen. MIL is yet another Mary. Grin

DD is named after both of them (with a slight twist).

Tyaca, there is definitely something in your theory. I was given a 'Mum' name in the 70s. It was deeply old-fashioned then. I was given a nice, plain middle name and my parents rationalised their 'out there' first name choice by reasoning that if I truly hated my name, I could always default to my middle name.

Anyway, turns out they were just a generation ahead of their time, as now you can't move for babies with my name (Is o bel).

DS has a Dad name. Again, really unfashionable right now, but I figure by the time he hits his prime, it'll be coming back in again. And the bonus is, he's absolutely the only one in his class!
