Unhelpful surname! Chloe or Freya or ?

Without wanting to out myself, our 'unusual', comedy surname is Aldcock.

I want to give our adorable DD a strong but nice, pretty name (though nothing too flowery / frilly) to off-set the burden of the surname.

The surname does rule some names out for me - for example I wouldn't use Carrie (Carry Old Cock) and I don't like alliteration so would rule out something like Anna.

Current thoughts are Chloe or Freya - what do you think?

Bearing in mind Aldcock might be said as Old Cock (hilarious I know!) - and does Freya Aldcock sound like Fray A Old Cock or am I over thinking?????!

As if choosing a name isn't hard enough! Darn surname!!!

Oooh tricky surname! I think Chloe Aldcock sounds better. With Freya the two 'a's would start to run together. Other suggestions:

I would go for something with an N at the end; Roisin (pr. Rosheen) is the name which came to mind.

Freya is beautiful and timeless.

I think freya would sound like frayed old cock.

Freya is sort of imprecise when paired with aldcock. Freya Smith, great. Freya Aldock, sorry? excuse me?

Chloe Aldcock works better but it has kkkuh at the beginning and at the end. Can I suggest Zoe instead? As a first name it's just as strong but the combination of Zoe and Aldcock is softer.

I think it needs a harder sound at the end to separate it from the A start of the surname, and a names will get smushed in. I think it does sound quite 'frey an old cock' - I doubt it will be shouted at her in the playground tbh, kids usually use more obvious insults imo but it does sound silly. I also just don't like Chloe, and think a consonant would just sound better.

I agree. You need a definite finish. And a name that people definitely know what you have said. Like Katherine.

I agree that the A ending for Freya wouldn't flow well at all. I would rule out names that end with the A sound.

Chloe and Zoe would go well.

I think I'm preferring Chloe to Freya - I wouldn't want 'Frayed Old Cock' to be a potential teasing name, bless her!

I do know what you mean about names with a definite, strong ending, maybe with a consonant though DS is Nathan and I wasn't sure another 'an' / 'en' ending would sound right as a pair, ie. Nathan & Megan?

Also, I had kind of ruled out names starting with a vowel with the surname starting with one. As I said I don't like alliteration so ruled out Anna (which I really like as a name) and also things like Eva - Eva Aldcock just doesn't sound right to me.

Of those mentioned I like Lilian and Sophie.

How is your name pronounced? is it all coe or allcock. The children should have your name!

Chloe or Sophie would go well and are both lovely names.

Lilian could be heard as Lily an .... so I'd avoid it.

I also have a phallic surname so empathise. like both names but if one were to over think it then miss c aldcock is cold cock ... freya ...ouch ..tanya should also be avoided like the suggestions of having a hard syllable at end of name

I do know someone whose surname is Cockburn but they pronounce it Co-burn.

Ha, I don't think we'll be changing surnames - I actually don't mind it and am quite traditional in wanting to have DH's name and all of us having it.

I think Chloe is still very much the front runner. Can't really see Cold Cock being an issue.

I think you're overthinking it wrt initials. All the same, I would avoid the letter B. Or a combination of S.M.

yes, I know an adult Freyja, but now it seems to be spelled without the J.

I know one who is Freja. I suppose this is a more correct German or Scandinavian spelling.

I'm a teacher and there are more teenage Chloes than any other name I can think of. It is pretty though. How about Cleo (similar, but more unusual)?

I have only ever seen Freya spelt this way, think it looks prettier - I do really like the name though just think it's a no-go with our surname (unfortunately!).

I know Chloe is popular - probably even more so 10/15 years ago - but I guess it's popular for a reason!
Not keen on Cleo (knew a dog called this!) though quite like Thea which was mentioned above.

Freya is quite an old spelling though, e.g. Dame Freya Stark.
