How would you pronounce this name - ANEA?

Just testing the water here...

My son has come up with a name for our daughter (due in December) which is Anea. We really like the sound of the name (as he is intending it) but can't work out how to spell it.

Anea is the best option but I am interested in how people would pronounce it if they saw it?

Please can you let me know if you would pronounce it An-EAR or An-EYA (as in the sound of Freya or the word Hay).

We are looking for the latter so if anyone has any other fail safe suggestions of how to write that I'd be very grateful. I love the sound but don't want to saddle the poor child with a name she is forever getting mispronounced and mis spelt.

Why are you letting your son make up a name for your baby?

Fwiw it looks daft and both pronunciations are odd. And it will definitely be constantly mispronounced and misspelled.

Anya would be much better.

Ah-nay is how I would pronounce it. Similar to the French name Anais

There are several possibilities for the first vowel too.

I saw it as "ayn" (as in anal). If you want "anne" I suggest you double the 'n'

I think if you spell it Aneya, people will pronounce it properly, after they've wrongly said Annya which will happen every single time.

Well he just made it up (we didn't ask him) and we're really struggling for names, And quite liked it. But I think the comments on here probably make the decision for me that it's just too confusing - and obviously not a real name! Thank you though :-)

I wouldn't know how to pronounce it because of that made-up quality. Ah-nay-yah, I suppose. But it weirdly makes 'anaemic' spring to mind.

I've heard the name INAYA it's Arabic origin sounds like Freya pronunciation At the end , it means solitude or concern.

There's a reason the grown ups choose the names.

I actually think it sounds quite pretty, I would spell it aneya. I don't think it matters what inspires you to pick a name as long as you like it and are happy to say it over and over again for the next 18 years!!

I just found Anaya it's a derivative of the same name inaya. Means same too. many Arabs will have heard of it. I don't think its weird. I expect most foreign names sound weird to British people. All my kids have Arabic names I expect they're weird but it hasn't deterred me. Entirely up to you op

I think you should spell it Anaya will be easier to pronounce.

There are lovely real names around. Why make up one that you don't known how to spell? All her life she will be asked to spell it and where it came from.

Looking at Anea, I would think Ah-Knee-Ah. I think it sounds quite pretty, but to be honest if other people spelt it wrongly/ pronounced it wrongly (which is inevitable) then you wouldn't have much grounds for complaint as it was dreamt up by your own admission.

I have just Googled it, however and apparently it is actually a Slavic name .

I knew an Anneia at Dd's nursery, think that was the spelling. It was pronounced An-nay-a by half the staff and An-eye-a by the other half.

My daughter's name is Anisa which is similar, but never gets mispronounced.

Also, my brother was asked what he would call his new baby sister, his response was 'Lemonade'. I'm happy to report it didn't even make the top 5.

Anaia is a Hebrew girls name pronounced how you are intending. I knew a girl called this and think it's a lovely name. I've just looked it up and it means 'God answered'.

Why can't you just spell it Aneya? If it's a made up name it doesn't matter how it's spelt does it?

I really like it with the correct Arab/Hebrew spelling. Even though your ds 'made' it up, it's a real name with a real meaning. Just not an English one. I love Anaia or Anaya

I dont think there is anything wrong with your son having made up a name, why not, he's part of the family and this gives the name a bit of meaning as to why you chose it.
