Is Asa too much like the laptop brand Acer?

My DH had ruled out Asa as he reckoned it was too reminiscent of the electronics brand Acer. BUT last night he made a favourable noise about not ruling it out so I'm spotting my 'in'.

Trouble is, a close friend has poached our favourite alternative of Joseph. And all other boys names seem too dull, too ugly or too weird!

Would you think of the brand Acer if you heard it?

Not too much like it, and in any case by the time our DCs are old enough for this to matter, brands will likely have moved on.

Could you sell him on the nickname Ace? I know that would work on my DH Wink

DitsyDonkey · 08/11/2013 11:27

I'm using Asa if I have a ds. It is NOT pronounced Acer it is Ace ah!

Gorgeous name imo!

Mutteroo · 08/11/2013 12:23

Asa is a cool name. Don't let DH put you off!

bundaberg · 08/11/2013 12:25

dp said the same thing, he works in IT so thought everyone at work would think ds3 was named after a computer!

but we used it and it's been fine. no-one has really made the comptuer comment at all

I met one at a party recently and assumed it was Acer (but as in the tree). Only found out later it was Asa.

Lubiloo · 08/11/2013 13:40

Too much like a common Swedish girls' name imo.

bundaberg · 08/11/2013 13:47

if you live in Sweden maybe. I've never met a female Asa here.

Rosencrantz · 08/11/2013 13:57

The Asa I know is 61, and I've known him all my life. Never once thought laptops. He predates laptops though!

Brodicea · 08/11/2013 14:21

Thanks for the ammo, I will mention this as I work on him Smile

Asa looks the same as the Swedish name, except there is a little round thing on the first A I believe which means it's pronounced differently so I think I'm safe. Plus I have a unisex name and have survived (although it was annoying to be told 'that's a boys name') in my early childhood!

Love Asa, we're considering it.

What puts me off more than Acer laptops is Advertising Standards Agency (ASA).

lottiegarbanzo · 08/11/2013 18:33

Well Acer is a tree and was so long before laptops came along!

Asa is lovely and us a strong heritage. I'd be saying 'you haven't heard of Asa Briggs?!' to the IT geeks.

Hadmeathello · 08/11/2013 18:49

No. It's a lovely name.

badtime · 09/11/2013 00:40

The Swedish girls' name is pronounced Awsa (more or less). I have met a few in England.

EBearhug · 09/11/2013 00:46

I work in IT, and my first thought is of maple trees. Mind you, I've been gardening since I was a child.

HorryIsUpduffed · 09/11/2013 01:24

I knew a lovely one, who died last year far too young. Olympian and genius.

What a guy.
