Dirk

I am 32 weeks pregnant with DC2. Me and DH are having just the same battle we did over names for DS1 (in fact, worse, because we used up one of the VERY few names we agree on, on him...).

My husband loves the name Dirk. I'm not so fond of it at all. Is there any kind of variation or derivative of Dirk that might possibly please us both?! All ideas welcome! Thankyou Smile

Do not inflict Dieter as a first name on anyone!!! Or Karsten...

Rockinhippy · 02/11/2013 04:51

Dirk just doesn't work, however you look at it, it just sounds naff

Kurt has a similar sound & IMO sounds much better, would he perhaps go for that instead ?

SweetCarolinePomPomPom · 02/11/2013 04:54

It's awful. Truly awful. It belongs in that category of cheesy 70's names like Wayne, Shane, Warren, Grant, Clinton, Lee, Dean, Vernon, Jason and Curtis.

They are all hideous.

Wishfulmakeupping · 02/11/2013 07:15

Dirk no no no awful boogie nights is my first thought!
But Ralph I love :) I know a little Ralph very cool

firefly4400 · 02/11/2013 09:42

A dirk is a type of dagger...would that sway him?

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 02/11/2013 10:10

Also, I just remembered that Maggie Gee wrote a novel called The White Family featuring an angry cockney white supremacist called Dirk. Awful book and not exactly mass market but that would always stick with me as an association.

puntasticusername · 02/11/2013 11:32

I've done the dagger argument, but I did not know about the white supremacist, that's a good one!

I suggested Barney, with chirpy enthusiasm, only to be met with a hard stare and a reminder of "that big sodding purple dinosaur". Sigh.

No! The poor kid wid be bullied relentlessly.

How about Kirk? It's a tiny, teeny, minuscule bit better.

puntasticusername · 02/11/2013 11:35

I quite like Kurt, and DH likes short names. I think we need at least two syllables in the first name as our surname is only one syllable, but he doesn't agree.

As you can see, we don't really agree on much!

No. How could there be? It's like a mash up between Dick and Berk. With a smattering of Dire. Jesus no.

And with a one-syllable surname it would just sound like a joke name, honestly.

As for having an impact on him, it doesn't need to! Because the baby's other parent has already said a big fat NO.

Back to the drawing board. Dirk is Dead.

Dork

FizzyGreenWater · 12/12/2019 13:35

God yes that's it. Like a mix of Dick and Dork.

Wow how is this name POSSIBLY not in the top ten?!! Grin

Lavenderblues · 12/12/2019 14:29

on the continent it's pronounced Derek.

No, it's not! Hmm

MikeUniformMike · 12/12/2019 14:42

Kirk or Derek?

Omashu · 12/12/2019 15:27

Zombie thread! Little Dirk is around 6 years old now.

PlantPotting · 12/12/2019 15:34

Barnaby/ Barney is an amazing name @puntasticusername - one of my favourites

Sorry but Dirk? It just sounds like Di*k to me?! I’ve never even heard it as a name before. I initially avoided this thread as the title made me think it was someone having us all on for a laugh. I agree you need words with DH. This name is bad and I say this as someone who likes unusual names

PlantPotting · 12/12/2019 15:34

Urgh! ZOMBIE

Bezalelle · 12/12/2019 20:35

Not the best! It sounds like caked-on dog poo being scraped from an icy pavement with a blunt metal spatula.

PuntasticUsername · 13/12/2019 14:12

Ha! I'd forgotten all about this thread.

Little Very-Much-Not-Dirk will indeed be six next him. I won't post his actual name because outing.

It’s one letter away from dirt and dick and rhymes with berk and jerk so it’s a no from me.

OVienna · 15/12/2019 20:03

I need to know what name they went for.
