Two years on and still wondering ...

I have a son called Xavier. We pronounce it Zaa-vee-air. Bad research on our part as this way of saying it is a mix of the French and Spanish pronunciation. So people often call him either 'Zay-vee-ur' or 'Zaa-vee-ay'

What do I do?
It's hard constantly correcting people especially if essentially they are right?
Do we change our way of saying it?
Do we change the spelling?
Do we just carry on and stop thinking about it??
His nickname is Zavy which everyone loves.

I actually quite like the American pronounciation 'Zay-vee-ur' but hate the French 'ay' sound at end.

I've got really concious of how I say it now.

Just correct people. Zavy is great.

I have a dd with an unusual name. Some days I correct people most of the time I dont bother. If it's a friend of mine saying it wrong I normally correct them, but sometimes I just can't be arsed. She goes by a nickname 90% of the time anyway so as the time has gone on I've decided I care less and less about it if people get it wrong. She is only 2.5 though so we'll see if she cares when she gets bigger. I don' know if she will get annoyed with it being said wrong. I often got called by the wrong name because it is similar to mine and I don't think I really cared :S

Sometimes when I correct people though, they still get it wrong and I must admit I'm terrible with some names and for some stupid reason they get muddled in my head and come out wrong, even when I try my best to get them right, so because of that I let people off when they get dd's name wrong!! Just go by the nick name as it's nice and easy!

Billy I hope you don't mind my saying so but I think you SHOULD correct people every time. Otherwise you teach you dd that her name doesn't really matter.

Although is it better to be relaxed about it otherwise maybe you are giving ur child a hang up about it?

My Xavier is a ZA-vee-ur. Which is how my Greek ExMiL said it would be pronounced in Cyprus.

Understand now ... Yes, have to be more ballsy and correct people!

Ds1 is nearly 9 now and has no qualms about correcting people himself :)

If you keep correcting family and friends then hopefully they will start getting it right!
