Is Elsie a stand alone name or a nn in your opinion?

I love the name and have a difficult surname which I think it sounds ok with.

I want to use it as a stand alone name but couldn't if its seen more as a nn.

How do you think of it?

Definitely a proper name.

And a very pretty one too Smile

ThePigOfHappiness · 23/10/2013 19:34

Nn for Elizabeth IMO. It's nice Smile

BackforGood · 23/10/2013 19:37

Stand alone - it never occurred to me it was short for anything.

MyNameIsSuz · 23/10/2013 20:47

I think it's lovely, but always think of it as a nickname - possibly only because I know an Elsie short for Elisabeth. It was on my short list, but I would have gone for Elsa and used Elsie as a nickname.

Lagoonablue · 23/10/2013 20:49

Nn for me. Lovely though. Good suggestion for Elsa with else NN.

hurricanemum · 23/10/2013 21:12

on it's own is fine imho

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 23/10/2013 21:21

Stand alone name. My dgm was an Elsie. Smile

Coupon · 23/10/2013 22:49

I think of it as a nickname for Elisabeth. But I'm old fashioned like that.

Misfitless · 23/10/2013 23:17

I think it's a beautiful name - too nice for a nickname, best as a stand alone name IMO.

Iworrymyselftosleep · 23/10/2013 23:25

Stand alone name - my grans Smile

fizzly · 23/10/2013 23:26

Definitely can be standalone - I know a few. However, I'm a big fan of the name Elspeth at the mo and I would use that with NN Elsie I reckon.

Emmabombemma · 23/10/2013 23:48

Stand alone name. My gran is an Elsie.

EricLovesAnyFucker · 24/10/2013 19:33

NN IMO.

tsw · 24/10/2013 19:39

Grandmother & great grandmother both standalone Elsies.

HaPPy8 · 24/10/2013 19:51

Stand alone. Its lovely.

NoComet · 24/10/2013 19:53

Stand alone, but don't let her shorten it to Ellie. Scowls at DDs friend. Why when there are so many Eleanor NN Ellie do we need another one!

NoComet · 24/10/2013 19:55

Elsie is pretty, it's short, why confuse my name muddling dyslexic brain by being another Ellie.

JoJoManon · 25/10/2013 15:03

My friend has an Elspeth, nn Elsie. I like that. If I wanted to call my daughted Elsie, I think I'd go Elizabeth or Elisabeth.

sonlypuppyfat · 25/10/2013 15:06

Don't rate old lady names at all, they went out of fashion for a reason.

elcranko · 25/10/2013 16:51

Stand alone name IMO. My gran was called Elsie too.

Littleredsquirrel · 25/10/2013 16:52

Elsie is a full name. Its my girl's name if ever I can persuade DH that we should have another baby.

Pentagon · 25/10/2013 17:26

I love the name Elsie - short and sounds lovely - we have just decided it will be DD2's name (she was born 2 days ago). A couple of people have said it's old-fashioned but most love it; and actually it's among the most popular girls names if you follow the mumsnet link - so it must be coming into fashion again. Not that I care...DH and I like it and that's all that matters.

Oblomov · 25/10/2013 18:26

Stand alone name nowadays. I know a few. I like the name a lot.

LauraChant · 25/10/2013 18:30

I think it's like Sally or Polly and has become a stand alone name in its own right.

Mintyy · 25/10/2013 18:31

A beautiful stand alone name.
