Evangeline - OK if a very Christian family, or do not mind being assumed to be one
Lillian- OK
Elizabeth/Elisabeth - lovely (I'd spell with z)
Michelle - bit dull, and not ready for a revival yet
Rini - never seen before and don't take to it
Renée - OK
Juliet - lovely
Sun - no. Just No.
Lavander - OK if spelt Lavender
Rose - lovely
Emilie/Emily - lovely (I'd spell with y)

sleepingbeautiful · 28/09/2013 15:43

Yes: Lillian, Elizabeth, Renee, Juliet, Lavender, Rose
No: Michelle, Rini, Sun
On the fence: Emily, I know so many, and prefer Emma.

sleepingbeautiful · 28/09/2013 15:45

Oh forgot Evangeline - no. Prefer Evelyn, Emmaline or Angelica. Like pp said, it's a bit 'evangelical'.

clary · 28/09/2013 15:46

Some of those are very unusual (never met anyone called Lavander or Sun or Rini!); some are very popular - Emily and Rose in every class.

I teach an Evangeline, know as Evie, and I rather like it. Suits her as she is serious and studious. Elizabeth is well ready for a revival.

HorryIsUpduffed · 28/09/2013 15:48

Love: Evangeline, Elizabeth/Elisabeth, Juliet

Dated: Lillian, Michelle, Rini/Renée

Overused: Rose, Emilie/Emily

Sun is just weird given the rest of the list, and Lavander/Lavender is a bit wet but unremarkable.

charleslingus · 28/09/2013 16:21

Evangeline is pretty with nice nicknames, ie eve/Eva/evie,Lina,Line,Lily,Lila,Lilou, gigi

Or I suppose it could all go wrong with Gelly or Vange but I'm sure that's pretty unlikely!

EverythingIsSoThrowback · 28/09/2013 18:21

Thanks for everyone's opinions so far.
Sun may seem to be unheard of, but it works with their surname.

OP posts:
nooka · 28/09/2013 18:39

In my view sun is just not a name, it seems a really odd choice especially in that list of otherwise fairly unremarkable names (not sure about Lavender either, but naming after herbs is fairly mainstream).

Personally I like Juliet best from that list, and as I have a Lilian obviously I like that too (although there are a huge number of Lilys around)

Rini looks a bit odd, and is perhaps better as a nn. I know an Irene who gets Rene (presumably pronounced the same - Ree-Nee). dd has a friend called Renee (not sure how to get the accent) it's pretty.

ConfusedPixie · 28/09/2013 18:50

Emily, Lillian and Elizabeth are nice. Rini makes me think of the English and American dubs of Sailor Moon (Serena's daughter was Rini in them). Sun makes me think of Aeryn Sun in Farscape. Lavander just looks like the parents couldn't spell Lavender but I like Lavender. With Juliet, Renee and Evangeline I'd assume a French connection?

EverythingIsSoThrowback · 28/09/2013 20:26

ConfusedPixie, not sure about her DH, but she is French, as am I.

Sun is now off the list due to sounding like 'son', and I think they're thinking Lavander as more of a middle name, and nooka, thank you for mentioning Rini is a TV name (she doesn't want her to be linked to anyone in that way) so that leaves:
Evangeline
Lillian
Elizabeth/Elisabeth
Michelle
Renée
Juliet
Rose
Emilie/Emily

To the posters/anyone else who doesn't like some of the names (or spellings) is there a particular reason, or do you just not like the name?

Retroformica · 28/09/2013 21:41

Adore evangeline. Elizabeth has many great nicknames.

Littlecherublegs · 28/09/2013 22:27

Like Lillian best.
Elizabeth is a good solid name, love the nickname Betsy.
Prefer Rosa to Rose and Amelie to Emilie.
Juliet also nice.

squoosh · 28/09/2013 22:29

Evangeline - far too frilly for me
Lillian - ok
Elizabeth/Elisabeth - dislike, it's so dry and dusty
Michelle - not ready for a revival just yet
Rini - seems a bit insubstantial
Renée - really like this one and love Ren for short
Juliet - lovely
Sun - people often refer to their sons as 'Son' so this would be a bit odd not to mention confusing
Lavander - a bit twee, also nickname 'lavvy' is awful
Rose - nice if a bit overdone
Emilie/Emily - the most boring name of all time

usualsuspect · 28/09/2013 22:29

Renée

not keen on any of the others.

pootlebug · 28/09/2013 22:32

Evangeline - not a fan...too much sense of evangelism which isn't really my thing
Lillian - really dislike but for no accountable reason. I like Lily. It might well get shortened to Lily so if you don't like Lily, avoid.
Elizabeth/Elisabeth - Like with a z
Michelle - dated
Rini - sounds made up
Renée - dated
Juliet - like
Sun - No.
Lavander - Lavender would be better.
Rose - Like.
Emilie/Emily - Like the normal spelling.

Unusual spellings like Emilie / Lavander will just involve your child having to spell out their name for people their whole life. No fun.

RestlessSoul · 28/09/2013 23:18

Evangeline is such a pretty name, I also like Juliet - there is something so timeless about Juliet

Sun just like that is a bit of a strange name, but then I went to school with a girl called Soleil and it suited her.

EverythingIsSoThrowback · 29/09/2013 07:40

pootlebug, I don't think name spelling is a problem for her, I've always had to spell my name to people, and so has my sister, never really bothered either of us.

It seems the top one would probably Juliet?

Any more opinions?

OP posts:
elcranko · 29/09/2013 16:38

I love Juliet and Rose.

OutragedFromLeeds · 29/09/2013 17:25

Evangeline - love it (mostly because of Nanny McPhee)
Lillian - not keen
Elizabeth/Elisabeth - lovely, classic, lots of good nn potential.
Michelle - fine, but not as nice as others on the list.
Rini - no
Renée - not keen
Juliet - not keen
Sun - ha ha ha no.
Lavander - no, but it's a good name for a rabbit.
Rose - nice
Emilie/Emily - nice

tammytoby · 29/09/2013 21:55

I like Lillian (but not nickname Lily which is so overused these days), Elisabeth, Juliet and Michelle (due a revival imo).

looki · 29/09/2013 22:41

Evangeline - too religious/preacher sounding, prefer Angeline/a.
Lillian - too popular and dislike Lily mmensely
Elizabeth/Elisabeth - really like and it has a multitude of nns to choose from.
Michelle - too 1975. Cannot ever see it being revived.
Rini - have heard of Renee but not Rini? Personally not a fan. Is it short for Irene?
Renée - as above.
Juliet - pretty name but not one I'd use myself. Not a fan of Julie names...
Sun - not sure what nationality you are - have never heard of anyone called it personally though.
Lavander - sounds like you are fed up with the more common/popular 'flower' names and looking for something different but Lavender/Bluebell/ don't really do it for me. I like Marigold though!
Rose - very pretty.
Emilie/Emily - nice but too popular.

Choccyhobnob · 01/10/2013 10:14

Evangeline - Like it
Lillian - Just don't like it but can't really say why!
Elizabeth/Elisabeth - Classic, prefer Elisabeth as I don't like the nicknames Liz or Lizzy
Michelle - Just don't. So 70's!
Rini - Don't like it
Renée - Quite like it, maybe a bit dated but nowhere near as bad as Michelle.
Juliet - pretty name but not one I'd use myself.
Sun - No. Friends little girl has Sunshine as her middle name though and it works!
Lavander - a bit wet but if they do use it spell it Lavender
Rose - very pretty.
Emilie/Emily - nice but too popular.
