What's the general feeling on Elena? Is it an old lady name? It's a totally different style to DDs name, which is a 'surname-first name' but that not too big a deal is it?

I think it's a lovely name. However the different pronunciations can be confusing. I know two Elenas. One like Helena and the other Eleeena. Eleeeena's mum always gets annoyed with me when I get them muddled up. As long as you are not going to become irate every time someone gets it wrong (and make the well intentioned person feel bad for it) then it's a good name.
