Husband really wants....

We only got our BFP 7 days ago (first baby) but we have casually been discussing baby names for the last year Grin

He has always really like Elise (pronounced e-lease) and I always vetoed it but now he is coming up with names like Chloe and Zoe and I think they sound a bit plain.

We recently decided if we had a girl, its middle name would be my mom's name and because of this, Elise is actually growing on me now as the baby would be called Elise Caroline which I think sounds quite nice.

However, her initials would be ECW - which reminds me too much of EWCM, Grin

Any thoughts??

I think Elise Caroline is lovely, I had no idea what EWCM was, I had to google to find out! I don't think its a connection many people would make, so that wouldn't worry me at all.

Elise is usually pronounced Ay(as in 'hay') -leez, as it is of French origin. Is that what you meant? Lovely name.

Nope, he definitely wants it pronounced as 'e-lease' - a nice soft and gentle sound Smile

It's kind of put me off now you've said it's of French origin Shock

I thought Elise was more eh-lease? In most UK accents that's how it sounds anyway.

I just meant that seeing as neither me or hubby are French we wouldn't want a French name, that's all Smile

It's French, pronounced Elise (def ah-leeze) , ending like Louise. Short form of Elizabeth.

Though I understand in America can be pronounced the way your husband wants and commonly mispronounced in UK...also will warn you gets read by the illiterate as Elsie.

I was taught the middle i has an accent grave over but that really doesn't happen in UK.

Love, love, love the name..but def not as your dh wants to pronounce it.

I think it's one of those names that has passed into common usage so it wouldn't be eyebrow raising to use it in the same way Francoise might be. Amelie,Isabelle,Anne all French origin and people don't think twice about it.

Do you mean it is supposed to sound like it El-lease?
We prefer it more Il-lease...

All this issue of mis-pronounciation is also really putting me off, haha

I think me and hubby are going to end up back at the drawing board Grin

The emphasis is on the second syllable rather than the first the e is soft rather than an "ee" sound. That's how the Elise's I've known have said it anyway.

I know a lovely young girl called Elise, and she pronounces it the way your husband wants to says it.

I wouldn't worry for a second about the initials. Most people wouldn't have a clue what "EWCM" stands for, and given the letters are in a different order (with no "M"), I doubt anyone would ever make that connection!

Without meaning to hurt your feelings, I would recommend giving your children names you know how to pronounce.

It is not a good idea to "prefer" to mispronounce a name. Your daughter will not thank you for it.

What about Lise. Which IS a French name and is pronounce 'Lease.' We loved it but ended up going with Lisa as a middle name.

Loads of Elises around. Expect her to be called Elise X (X being initial of your surname)

Loads of Chloes around. Expect her to be called Chloe X (X being initial of your surname.)

Not many Zoes around

Practically no Carolines around. Expect her to be the girl with the really unusual name.

No one (apart from someone OBSESSED with conception) is going to think Hmm if someone's initials are EWCM. Most people wouldn't bat an eyelid if you called your DD Ovia Bianca Cervica Muca TBH.

And Initials ECW are NOTHING like EWCM. No one would get the two confused.

I do like the name Lisa though!! Smile

I am honestly surprised at how people are saying the word Elise is pronounced Smile However, there have been quite a few variants amongst the posters which just proves there is no right or wrong way Smile

If I saw the name Elise written down I would automatically say it as e-lease (or e-leese, whichever you prefer) Grin

I went through a phase of liking Diana actually - DH said a definite no to that though!!! I also liked Olivia.

Hubby likes Jasmine - but pronounced Yaz-min.... [hmmm]
