Welsh girls names in Scotland

Looking for a name that won't be too tricky outside of Wales but to keep with the tradition of all the women in my family having Welsh names. I really like the name Eluned but worry that having 'ned' at the end is asking for trouble in Scotland. I also like Cariad although I know it's not really a name per se. I like Megan, my Nain's name but everyone would just say 'Meg-un' rather than 'Meg-an' wouldn't they?

Any opinions/ideas would be great.

I would pronounce Megan as Meg-an.

I've also heard on an Anwen, Arwen and Olwen in Scotland and also Carys - they are all Welsh. yes?

I think there are probably loads more but you will probably know better than me :)

What about Mari? Very popular and well-liked in Scotland but also welsh (according to my welsh friends)

okay, had a wee look at some Welsh names and I like the following and think they would be fine in scotland:

In Scotland Mari would be Mairi or Mhairi, but i agree it works really well and is a lovely name.

Bronwyn/en, Elinor, Erin/Eryn, Iona

I'm in Scotland, and my friend has a Bethan. Most people seem to pronounce it correctly. Short names like Nia, Sali, Gwen, Mabli and so on would work well too, as they are easy to pronounce.
Eluned is lovely, I wouldn't worry too much about the 'ned' ending, if you like it, go for it! Or there's always Lleucu, which I think is a beautiful name, but I hate to think how most people in Scotland would attempt that one!

Bronwen, Olwen, Carys and Mari are out as that covers mum, aunt, me and sister in law right there!

I do like the sound of Anwen and Lowri. Betsan is cute too. It's good to have Scottish opinions.

I don't think an eluned would be bullied but to be honest in a Scottish accent it sounds quite harsh - like Ellen-Ed

I'm in central belt too, originally from edinburgh, i'm presuming you would pronounce it El oo ned? or El uh ned? tbh, it depends what circles you move in, but there would probably be some smart arse that would pick up on the ned bit and have a bit of fun with it.

imo tho, kids don't get bullied for their names, however once they have decided to pick on your child, they have ammunition. It really depends what your child is like, if they are confident and popular, her name wont matter a jot, if she struggles, it might become a stick to beat her with....sorry, probably not the answer you want to hear.

No that's fine. I think the reason I have my concerns about it is that I was bullied because of my name, spent most of my younger school years in England so I stuck out like a sore thumb. I love my name and have always been very defensive of correct spelling and pronunciation, to little avail but have to say Scottish people seem to be a bit better!

My elder son was bullied at school but not about his name, my younger son has a more unusual name but aside from having it pointed out that it rhythms with Beer he's never had an issue. The classes are honestly full of all sorts of names and I've never come across anyone bullied for it.......and he did have a girl called Santa in his class! despite our reputation, I find Scots in general pretty tolerant people.

I think it's an unusual but beautiful name.

Aylis or ailis would work really well here too.

Funnily enough I agree Megan doesn't work so well but I'm not sure why.

What about Catrin, Elena, Erin, Gwen/Gwyneth, Iona, Rhian/Rhiannon?

Disclaimer - looked at Welsh names site so apologies if any of these are wrong! They all look like names which would not immediately cause problems with pronunciation.

Seren seems to be one everybody can say. As does Alys.

People on here seem to go mad for Seren but it doesn't even sound like a name to me, much less a nice one. Sorry :(

I can see what you mean. It's not my favourite Welsh girls name but unfortunately Angharad and Eirlys do not fit the easy to pronounce criteria

In Scotland though we are used to all sorts of Gaelic names so I don't think it would really be too much of an issue, I like Eirlys, very pretty.

I agree about Seren, not that fussed on it. I love Angharad, not sure if I am brave enough to use it though. I seem to like names ending in the letter 'd'. No idea why.

What about Elenid if you're worried about the 'ned' aspect of Eluned. The only 'problem' I can see with Eluned is the mispronounciation aspect - Ee-loon-ed etc. but presumably people would only need to be told how to say it once to get it right .
