girl sibling name for Olwen .... need help!

We found it really easy to decide on Olwen with Dd last time but now I don't have a clue so I would be grateful for any suggestions.

I really don't know whether to go for another Welsh name (we live in Wales I am Welsh) or whether to go for another old fashioned name (e.g. Enid or Agnes - i like both of those more than DH who is not convinced). The list of Welsh names just seems a bit short though as DH is English and obviously needs to be able to pronounce it properly (lovely names such as Gwenllian and Eirlys have been ruled out).

Anyone got ideas for a girl's name to go with Olwen?

My favorite names in the world are Elin and Carts.

Meh.... I suppose I'm looking for an unusal Welsh name which is still easily pronounced by English relatives.

When people hear Olwen's name I often get told that it was their grandmother or their great aunt's name so maybe I am looking for an old fashioned Welsh name. My Nanna didn't have a Welsh name but I wonder what Welsh names where popular in the early 20th century or how I would even find out?

Eiriol (easier to pronounce than Eirlys)
Eleri
Eluned
Dilys
Lowri
Haf
Mair
Nia
Bethan
Nerys
Eira
Manon
Carys/Cerys
Delyth
Llinos
Efa (as in Eva but Welsh spelling)
Ffion
Lona
Seren

Betsan
Rhoswen
Rhiannon
Caitlin
Sian

Olwen was my great aunt's name so if you're looking for names of the same period then the ones from my list that are from those generations of my family would be Eluned, Dilys, Mair, Lona and Eiriol. I wanted Eirlys for my dd but also discounted it as difficult for non-Welsh speaking family to pronounce correctly.

Tirion is very traditional and pretty hard to get wrong as it's completely phonetic. The only difference would be Welsh-speaking family rolling the 'r'

Toowittoowoo · 22/07/2013 15:43

Eiriol is lovely - I've never heard on it - that is now on the list! I like Mair too and Betsan. Dh likes Nia but I'm not sure. I went to school with a few girls called Nia and although they were all really nice it does seem a bit odd.

What do you think of Bettrys (welsh version of Beatrice)? Dh thinks that it sounds like I am just mispronouncing Beatrice but it is my favourite name.

Delyth and Ffion are good too though so they are on the list

Love your suggestions so far.

I have an Enfys. Her NN is Effy Smile

MarmaladeNapkins · 22/07/2013 15:56

I like Bettrys, very pretty. Eiriol means snowy, as in Eira 'snow' and Eirlys 'snowdrop'. Eiriol would be even easier to pronounce and means 'content'.

MarmaladeNapkins · 22/07/2013 16:04

That should have been Siriol in my last post

Toowittoowoo · 22/07/2013 16:15

siriol is very nice too and I didn't go to school with anyone called that!

I can't believe how hard it is to choose a second DD's name! We seemed to have loads to choose from last time but this time I don't like any as much as Olwen and I feel guilty about it being a second choice.

Gwennan
Menna
Cadi (promounced Kay-dee)

AnnaBegins · 22/07/2013 19:45

How about another celtic country, like Brittany? I love Sterenn! Or Gwenael, Katell...

niffernaffer · 22/07/2013 20:22

What about Gwennan instead of Gwenllian?

niffernaffer · 22/07/2013 20:23

Also Seren, Nia, Nerys?

PurpleGirly · 22/07/2013 20:25

Angharad

kelda · 22/07/2013 21:17

Bettrys is very pretty and doesn't sound like a mispronunciation of Beatrice.

TalkativeJim · 22/07/2013 21:23

We had Olwen on the list for DD -

other names on the list that I can remember were:

Hawys
Betrys
Annest
Manon
Heledd

I think Hawys goes well with Olwen!

thegreylady · 22/07/2013 21:31

I love Eleri Lowri and Seren

TalkativeJim · 23/07/2013 12:37

Cadi isn't pronounced Kay-dee!!

It's Caddy, like a golf caddy.

Always!!!

Clearlymisunderstood · 23/07/2013 12:39

Gwenlais?
