Baby names

Cecile, Cecily, Tabitha or Tess?

Can I have your votes please? I am a lunatic with a nearly 4 week old baby girl without a name. We just can't seem to make a decision and it's starting to induce panic in me and the relatives. I'm sure this is something that I can blame motherhood for, I never used to be this indecisive.

betsy I disagree about going with Cecily, Cecile as neutral ground if neither of you really like them. If you both do like them a lot it is a different story. Would you go with Cess as a nickname as it is similar to Tess?

If dh is keen on Tess would you prefer it as Tessa or even Teresa with Tess for short?

If dh doesnt like Tabitha because he associates it with cats would it be worthwhile trialling the name for a day to see if this association can change for him?

Also have you chosen middle names? Do any of the names (middle names included) stand out and go really well with your surname? Maybe try looking at the name as a whole name and see what you like the best.

I'm not keen on Tess. Tabitha is lovely. Cecile/Cecily don't really do anything for me. Celia?

Tabitha's definitely best. Like Tess too, but agree with others about the Thomas Hardy connection; it does sound a bit themey to me!

Not keen on Cecily - sounds a bit lispy and 'wet' to my ears.

Isn't Cecilia a royal baby name contender after the Queen Mothers Mother?

It has to be Tabitha.

I have one, she is a kick-ass 2 year old.

What some people will never get is that the feline qualities of the name only add to it's amazingness they do not detract. And anyway, once associated with your daughter no-one will think about cats, only her.

I like Tess too but I prefer names with more than one syllable

Imagine shouting Cecile or Cecily across a crowded playground, they don't sound right.

Tabitha is lovely, Cecily is lovely. Tess is a rather tragic character in Hardy though but the name is lovely.

Have you thought of Celeste? I think that's really pretty. But honestly, they are all great names (and Tabitha doesn't make me think of cats, just a nice name and if DS3 had been a girl he would either have been Tabitha or Hannelie).
I am jealous! Congratulations on your daughter.

I would have said Tess but not with Jude, definitely too themey. Gorgeous names though.

Cecile/Cecily/Celanything got to be in my least favourite set of names. Sounds like the girl at school who'd always be too prissy to have fun but dob you in first chance she got.

Tabitha it is!

Tabitha. Lovely. I just don't get the cat argument - it hasn't stopped Felix becoming hugely popular.

I'm Tess, my brother is Jude, and hardly anyone has commented on the Thomas Hardy thing despite the fact it was intentional. (My mum is a retired English Lit teacher).

My sister also has a name from Hardy, although less obvious, as it is from one of the tales in Life's Little Ironies.

All are nice, most names seem strange for the first few weeks I think. You would soon stop thinking about cats or a Thomas Hardy connection. I would prefer Celeste or Celestine over Cecily and Cecile.

What did you choose in the end OP?

Love Tabitha (I know one aged 8 and she is cool and sweet), and I never understand why people hate Tabby or Tabs as nicknames.

Re. the cat thing - Monty, Cleo, Luna, and loads of other popular names are more common for cats - and I volunteer at a cat rescue centre!

Tabitha is the little girl from Bewitched.

I love Tess too, but agree that Tess and Jude is a bit much because of Thomas Hardy - both tragic novels.

Cecily for me.

Tabitha is gorgeous! Currently on my short list too and having the same cat issue with my partner.

Not so keen on Cecily as it reminds me of an uber posh drippy kind of girl with a lisp (sorry!)
