Is this the worst name ever?

I'm watching 16 and pregnant (currently addicted to any pregnancy related programs) and the couple featured have decided to call their baby boy Gannon.

I don't mean to be rude but I think it's awful! All I can think of is gammon!!

Just wondered whether I'm weird for finding it such an unappealing name and what you lot though of it?

It is pretty bad.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 28/06/2013 22:53

Yep... Pretty much gammon with n's! But with the American accent it sounds even worse... A bit like ginnon? Yes yes re Colin!!

Keith is another one I cannot understand being used for a baby... Baby Keith?!

I saw that episode, it's a bloody awful name. I went to school with someone whose surname was Gannon, and I found it rather harsh sounding as a surname.

I have recently come across a Shyla locally. It just seems so wrong to me.

LemonBreeland · 28/06/2013 23:03

Also my dh and his brother are kevin and Nigel, what was my mil thinking?

I love Colin and Nigel. There is a boy at DDs school called War which is a bit strange

HeffalumpTheFlump · 28/06/2013 23:26

Lori, not meaning to be rude but are you joking or being serious? If you're being serious would you actually call your baby Nigel or Colin?

Not keen on Hugh either, it sort of goes with Kevin and Nigel......

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 29/06/2013 10:00

Nooo I really like Hugh! Agree about Keith though. Sounds like Quiche.
I know a baby Colin, think that one is not too bad when you get over the surprise at baby Colin.

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 29/06/2013 10:01

Also agree about Kevin, even before "we need to talk about..."

lljkk · 29/06/2013 10:03

Americans don't have Gammon, that's why. It doesn't mean anything to us.

valiumredhead · 29/06/2013 14:26

Oh I like Hugh, it's a good name.

Thought of another one-Simon.

valiumredhead · 29/06/2013 14:27

And Craig !

marriedinwhiteagain · 29/06/2013 14:34

Gannon is bad. I don't like Jayden either. Or Kyle or Kylie or Wayne or Ruby or Graham, or anything made-up. I would tell you what my sil called her boys but the names are so blindingly awful that it would out me. Never heard of anyone else's children called anything so daft. And MIL had the cheek to hoot when a nephew called his twin daughters Rosalinde and Arabella.

LoriGrimes · 29/06/2013 17:17

HeffalumpTheFlump I am serious. Both Colin and Brian were on my list if we had a boy, not so much Nigel though as that's the vicars name.

valiumredhead · 29/06/2013 17:31

Married-pm me please with namesGrin

squoosh · 29/06/2013 18:25

I saw that episode of 16 and Pregnant and did think wtf, would you choose Gannon for your precious newborn!

It's an Irish surname, and an ugly one at that.

Nigel is just awful and there is no legitimate reason for inflicting it on someone.

AllegraLilac · 29/06/2013 23:27

I really love Nigel. Think it's because I loved the Wild Thornberries.

MustafaCake · 29/06/2013 23:35

Gannon is one of the most ugly names I have ever heard!

I cant imagine looking at my newborn and thinking "ah, he looks just like a Gannon".

Bonkers!!

sleepingbeautiful · 29/06/2013 23:38

Gannon IS weird. Then again if I'd had a kid at 16 it would've likely been called something godawful too.

I like Colin and Craig. I also agree on Nigel though. And Norman. Can't ever picture someone looking at a little baby and thinking oo yes he looks just like a Norman?!

HeffalumpTheFlump · 30/06/2013 00:02

Really glad I'm not alone in my opinion of Gannon!

I've seen that episode as well. It's one of the more 'interesting' names on that programme, and that's saying something!

Of the normal names out there, one that always gives me the shudder is Lea (pronounced like Leah). I really don't like it. I realise this is my issue and it's probably a really nice name to others, I just seriously dislike it.

squoosh · 30/06/2013 00:27

TidyDancer you've reminded me that one of the other 16 and Pregnant/Teen Mom couples had twin girls that they called Ali and Aleah Hmm

TidyDancer · 30/06/2013 05:47

Worse still when you remember Ali's real name is Alianah (sp?)! And the mother was Leah. So you have Leah, Aleeah and Alianah. Bizarre. They were a lovely family though, which is a rarity in that programme.
