Me and DP have decided on a boys name, but for a girls name I prefer Evie but he prefers Evelyn with Evie as a nickname. what do you all prefer?

If you pronounce Evelyn like 'Ev-lin' to sound like Bev, then this is the best choice

If you would pronounce it 'Eev-lin' sounding like evening, then choose Evie.

I always believed that it was a male name if pronounced Eevlyn (Evelyn Waugh) and female if pronounced Evlynn (Evelyn Glennie). I like the name but obviously if pr. Evlynn Evie doesn't work as a nickname so I would go for Evie or Eve with Evie as a NN.

You see I'd see Evie as a more natural nn for 'Eva-Lynn', as Ehv-a-Lynn (like Evelyn Glennie), which I think of as the more usual female pronunciation, is a different sound.

X-post, agreeing with thegirlonthelanding.

I am absolutely convinced though that there is always a third syllable in the middle of the male and female versions, almost just a pause but it's there.

My great aunt is Evie in her 90s so definitely can be an adult's name. I really wanted Evangeline for DD but DH said no. I regret it now, she's Evie but I think I'd rather have it short for something else.

Evelyn. Evie is a nickname

My DD is Evelyn, sometimes nn Evie. When asked, she will tell you her name is Evelyn. I love it, and it means Optimistic, which is brilliant :-)

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2013 23:25

Evelyn nn Evie.

She has the option of Evie,Eve or Evelyn then.

I don't like diminutives as given names though, generally speaking.
