Hi,
due in a couple of weeks and I think we have a boys name but struggling on girls.

I quite like Maiya, promounced (My-ah).

We have a one sylable surname beginning with C.

I really like it and hubby warming to it, but would just like your thoughts and whether you know of any?

Its our first and just wading through this minefield.

Thank you :-)

I like it but would spell it Maya or Maia, not both as it's confusing. I think Maia is my favourite spelling, with the Y I wouldn't be sure if it was My-ah or May-ah (could be just me).

Mellymog · 30/05/2013 15:19

I know of one 2 yo with the name and spelling. It's nice.

samuelwhiskers · 30/05/2013 15:19

Love it

Timetoask · 30/05/2013 15:22

Its very nice but I would go with Maya, otherwise she will have a lifetime of having to correct other people's spelling of her name.

dellabob · 30/05/2013 15:25

Thanks all :-)

I was wondering about lifetime of spelling and also the pronunciation of spelling it as Maya - instinctively I want to say it as May-a and not My-a.

I would go with Maia, both Maya and Maiya sound like May-A in my head. Very pretty name.

AmIGoingMad · 30/05/2013 15:39

Pretty name! I'd be tempted to go with the Maia spelling but not against the Maiya spelling.

booksshoescats · 30/05/2013 15:43

We have a Maya - so of course I think it's a gorgeous name Grin. As well as sounding pretty, it's international (Indian, Polish, Israeli, South American, etc.), and can be said in almost any language, which works well in our family!

I love the way it looks spelled Maya, but we do get May-a a LOT, which I wasn't expecting - if we'd realised we might have gone for the Maia spelling. To me Maiya looks odd (and I've never seen it before), as does Mya/Mayah/Myah, although I've see all of those.

fussychica · 30/05/2013 16:21

Lovely.

rockybalboa · 30/05/2013 16:23

I would pronounce it May-ah so you'd need to be prepared for that. I guess Mya as a spelling would make for an easier life?

TidyDancer · 01/06/2013 01:13

It's a very pretty name, but I would go with a more classic spelling.

DessieLou · 01/06/2013 02:30

I know a 2 year Mya which is lovely. I would pronounce Maiya as Maya so be careful of the spelling.

manicinsomniac · 01/06/2013 09:07

I thought there were three different names with several different spellings:

Mia/Miya - Mee-ah

Mya/Maia/Maja - My-ah

Maya/Maiya - May-a

I quite like them all!

Cassieyellow · 02/06/2013 18:25

As a teacher I have Mya, Maya, Mia, Maiya's, - my head is spinning! Pretty names but don't make your poor girl have to correct us teachers all the time..we will drive her mad saying it wrong! One girl in one class pronounces it one way, another in a different way. I end up avoiding saying their names.

miffybun73 · 02/06/2013 18:32

Like it, but would spell it Maia or Maya.

MadeOfStarDust · 02/06/2013 18:41

nice - but our reception class has 6 with various spellings..... all of whom thought they'd be the only one.....

CPtart · 02/06/2013 18:41

I know several in DS primary school.

scaevola · 02/06/2013 18:43

There will be a lot of variant pronunciations, so you and DD will have to explain over and over again. Is that likely to bother you?

BackforGood · 02/06/2013 18:50

If you want people to say "My-ah", then spell it Mya, otherwise people will look and think "May-ah".
Equally, the other way round, when she's giving her name to someone to write down, she will have to spell it for them every time.

Mehrida · 02/06/2013 19:09

I know a 6m Maiya. Apparently it's the Russian spelling.

Named by parents who have very easy to spell names (think Ted and Ruth) so no concept of what a pita it is to have an unusal speelling!

Lovely name though and quite nice to see something different to Mia.

dellabob · 04/06/2013 14:11

Lordy Lordy now I'm stumped.

Thanks for all your imput MNers, and there was me thinking it wouldn't be that well used :-)
