I think Aaliyah is a beautiful name and sounds much nicer than Alaia. (Said a-lee-uh)
Any name that sounds like a phrase isn't good IMO especially 'a liar'.

FetaCheeny · 20/05/2013 20:16

Alaia is so pretty if pronounced a-lie-ah. Would personally leave off the Mai, but a pretty name none-the-less. Reminds me of Maia which I also love.

EasterHoliday · 20/05/2013 20:18

ah, I didn't think of silly spelling of Aaliyah, I thought it was a tribute to Azzedine Alaia...

ThenWeTakeBerlin · 20/05/2013 20:48

Is Aaliyah the same name as Alia (pron. AH-leah)? I know an arabic girl with that name, really pretty.

Littlemissexpecting · 20/05/2013 20:52

Alaia means joyful and mai translates as ocean or elegance in Chinese (according to the DM)

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 20/05/2013 22:19

Fucking awful name. Hate, hate hate hyphenated named that end in mai/mae/may.

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 20/05/2013 22:38

Not to my taste at all, not one aspect of it, but I wouldn't have expected it to be.

See, when our turn to be MILs rolls round and our grandchildren's names are announced, we are going to be all sniffy and pained, passive aggressive looks, aren't we?! Grin

Pantone363 · 20/05/2013 22:39

Awful

GW297 · 20/05/2013 22:43

Hideous name

twinklestar2 · 20/05/2013 22:47

I want to like it but I don't. Alaia would have been fine, don't like the hyphen or the Mai part of it.

EleanorFarjeon · 20/05/2013 22:54

It's atrocious.

FatimaLovesBread · 21/05/2013 11:53

Is it Mai as in may or as in the Chinese pronounced My?
The i makes me read it as 'my' but 'A liar my' sounds poo

ladymia · 21/05/2013 13:07

Bad for so many reasons I don't even know where to start

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/05/2013 20:20

It's Ah-lie-ah itsn't it? Like the designer?

Horrible name imo.

effyzm · 25/05/2013 21:00

I thought it was pronounced A-lee-ya my. Poor kid has no chance will always be correcting people. Not a fan.

GibberTheMonkey · 25/05/2013 21:34

in both Chinese and welsh Mai is pronounced pretty much as 'my'

OutragedFromLeeds · 26/05/2013 01:56

I don't mind it! Wouldn't use it myself, but I've heard much worse and she can always drop the Mai bit if it dates badly.

I wonder if schools will have to have 'May/Mae/Mai' amnesties in the future and just call all the kids by the first part of their name?

amandine07 · 26/05/2013 09:40

Oooh am not keen on hyphenated names!
Alaia would have been ok just on its own but with the Mai, instead of May, it's all a bit too much.
Too matching, rhymey sounding.

I preferred Aoife Belle...!

amandine07 · 26/05/2013 09:43

I dislike names where everyone's scratching their heads about the variations in pronunciation...the get labelled idiots for pronouncing it wrong!

Glad I'm not a teacher is all I can say!

amessagetoyouYoni · 27/05/2013 12:54

Hooting@ 'Mai amnesties' Grin

lovemybabyboy · 27/05/2013 19:28

I was pronouncing it A-lay-ah May, I wonder how the parents actually pronounce it, curious to know now!

themilkmonster · 27/05/2013 23:56

I read it as A-lay-a May too. Although if that's correct then I think I would have preferred the spelling Alaya May so that there's no confusion over pronunciation.

AlaiaAguero123 · 08/04/2017 18:43

It is pronounced A-Lie-A

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 08/04/2017 19:30

Zombie thread !
