Oscar as a girl's name....?

We have just had a gorgeous baby girl and we have called her Oscar. Are we making a bad decision (our parents think so)?? The name derives from Os-Cara so we hoped we could get away with it.

If you've already chosen the name, do you really want people's honest opinions? Are you thinking of changing the name if you get negative feedback?

Yes I think that is not your best ever plan.

Oscar is really a boy's name, I have never heard it used for a girl. It's not Alex, or Billy, or Taylor or Jordan.

Sorry to be blunt but could you change it? How about Cara? Or Olga if you like the O?

I too think this is not a great idea. For her whole life the first conversation she will have with anyone will be explaining her unusual name. She also will get misdirected mail, confusion at job interviews, meetings etc etc. If she happens to be quite masculine looking it may well be a source of teasing. How about Tosca? Or Oscara? Lottie? Oksana?

Yes I agree.... People will assume she is male. I always think about what a name will look like on a CV. I think Cara is a pretty alternative.

When I got confirmed a friend of mine had Oscar as her middle name. I had Jude. Both boys' names. They are names, they're not life sentences. If you've already done it, then great, enjoy your choice and your baby girl. :)

I'm sorry but it's a boys name. Of course she is your daughter and you can theoretically do as you choose but given there are 1000s of girls names out there why would you give her a boys name and then complain when others don't like it.

Well, it may have been known for eccentric aristocratic families to name a daughter Andrew or Wilbur after some illustrious male forbear due to inheritance stipulations in a will(!), but in this case, unless you have an illustrious forebear called Oscar, it seems unnecessary.

It's unusual but then as a Brit in the US, I've met baby girls called Smith and Parker so here, I doubt it'd raise any eyebrows.

Agree with pps... She is in for a lifetime of 'Dear Mr...', people mishearing, etc. I've met a couple of people in similar situations and they were both completely weary of it. Sorry OP. :(

It often gets snickers as a boy's name. I really wouldn't want to be saddled with it as a girl.

Ps is this a wind up? I'm struggling to believe someone would really do this...

I actually like boys names for girls - thinking Tommy, Robbie, Frankie, Henri, Hari, and I see where you are coming from with Oscar. Looked at one way it has a touch of rakish glamour. The trouble is it is sooo common just now for boys and if she can't pull off extreme glamour/quirkiness as she grows up (and lets face it - not many can) 'Oscar'will be a burden. I would use it as a mn and pick something else.

According to the 1990 United States Census, Oscar ranked as the 151st most popular male first name, the 4,120th most popular female first name and the 13,443rd most popular last name. (Just googled this).

Seems more and more boys names are being used for girls - I know a female Elliot, a female Georgie and a female Jamie. Not sure I personally would choose such names, but if you love Oscar that much and have already named her, I'm sure people will quickly associate it with your lovely daughter! Congratulations!
