Boys names... Elliot, but not sure...

I love the name Elliot and it's one of the only names myself and my dh can agree on, but I'm worried that he'll end up being called Smelliot or Ellie or some other stupid nickname. Could someone who has an Elliot verify if this happens? My mum always sees what rhymes with a baby's name to see if they could be made fun of, so I know she'll pick up on Smelliot and say he'll be called that and that's putting me off.

Other names we can agree on (but I don't like as much!) are Elias, Elijah, Aodh (pronounced 'A' - Irish for Hugh), Sebastian (nn Seb), Josiah (but dh's nephew is Joseph, so too similar).

He likes Max, but I think it's becoming too popular. I also like Kellan, Rafe, Arlo, Lane (definitely can't use this though as he'd end up being called Street, or something similar!).

Boys' names are sooooo difficult.

Any other suggestions based on the names we like?

I love Rafe. Would have used it but was too similar to DS1's. There is an Elliot in DS1's class and he is always just Elliot. You could shorten to Eli (pn ee-lie) to pre-empt people using Ellie (smelly Ellie - oh dear). Wouldn't use Aodh if you don't live in a Gaelic speaking area as no-one will ever be able to pn it. You wouldn't just use 'Hugh'? Like Rafe I love this and would have used it if I could have. Elias is lovely, Arlo awful - sounds like a brand of dog food!

We actually live in Ireland, so Aodh wouldn't be a problem here, but could be when he's older if he travels... Food for thought on that one, thanks.

Yeah, I love Rafe too, but dh needs convincing. He's always said he'd like to call his son Max and has been set on this name for years, but it doesn't do much for me. Am afraid I'll regret it if we call the baby that.

Btw DS1 also has a Josiah in his class who get called 'Siah' pn sigh-ar, which sounds lovely.

I know of 2 Elliots, one is a baby and one is 6, I think it's a lovely name. The older Elliot we know is in my dd's class, I think the family shorten his name to El or Els.

Out of your names, I like Elijah, Sebastian and I quite like Lane!

How about Eban, Joel, Jago or Rowan?

lovemyscarf I forgot that Rowan is actually on my list, but my dh has vetoed it. No idea why. I think it's a lovely name. He likes Joel, but we can't go with it for the same reasons as Josiah.

No Elliot's I know have been called Ellie or anything.

I have a 6 year-old Elliot and noone has ever tried to call him anything else.

I think you are over thinking this.

Have known a couple of Elliots and they have just been called Elliot.
I think it is a good name, no problems at all imo. If you both agree you should go for it.

I know a female Elliot who does go by Ellie but wouldn't think that a boy would be shortened to that!

I have an Elliot - he is still only little but he hasn't been called smelly Elliot thus far
I did realise that it sort of rhymes with idiot but it suits him so much that I don't mind.
This is the 2nd thread in a fortnight that I have said something similar on so could be going up the old popularity chart if that bothers you

OliviaMMumsnet you have great taste in names! It would bother me if the name was to become very popular though. Really want him to be the only Elliot in his class. Hmm, will have to think about that. Still have a few weeks left.

I know an Elliot who gets Elli and it does put me off I am afraid. But then again I prefer short names for boys.
