Rian for a boy?

Hello! I am expecting DC2 in August, I have a DD and we also didn't know what sex she would be until she was born and DP and I managed to get through the whole pregnancy without agreeing on a single boys name! I fear
this is happening again so am trying hard to think of some names...

So I think I like Rian, pronounced Ree-an, rather than just an alternative spelling to Ryan. It is a legitimate name just not common but I really dislike 'made up' names and also bizarre spellings and am concerned people will think this comes under one of these categories!

Any thoughts?

I thought you were going for a kooky version of Ryan, particularly as it is pronouncd the same in 'Brian', which everyone knows.

Grin Laughing at the missing the B off Brian comment, I hadn't even considered that!

DP says it is a well know name in SA as pp's have said, he pronounces it differently though, more like ree-aaan with a bit of a rolling r and extended ahhhh sound. I would sound like I was trying to be really pretentious if I tried to say it like that with my accent!

I still like it though and like that if anyone questioned it I can just point to the baby's legitimate South African heritage and that would be enough. So basically just proving that as ever these threads could have 90% of people saying they hate the name and ultimately the op will name their child whatever the hell they like Wink

We have a Brian in our family so it was the first thing I thought of Grin

A very common south African name, but usually spelt Riaan (pronounced ree-arn).

Yes that's what DP said Rangirl, you've explained it much better and I couldn't remember what spelling he said but that's it! Damn baby brain, and I'm definitely going for brain there, not Brian Grin

I think its ok if you like it but people will ask how to pn it and spell it wrong. If you dont mind that its fine, discussing a name is a good ice breaker so not a total negative, just something to consider.

Congrats on baby Grin

Lol I get the rolling r bit lol. Another common name similar is Ruan, pronounced like roo-arn also with the rolling r. I laughed so at the b left off brian.
