Jasper - wasps
Beau - sounds too girly
Amos - old man
Marvin - awful
Fraser - quite nice
Rowan - again a bit girly to my ears
Flynn - OK
Miles - OK
Roman - Ok but I know a few
Casper - the ghost
River - dead actor/hippy
Hector - don't like the meaning
Curtis - bit 80s
Byron - nice for a dead poet otherwise no
Otis - my nieghbours dog
Chester - bit American
Orlando - actor

I think Fraser is the only one I would vaguely consider using myself. They all seem a bit 'trendy'

BananaHammocks · 30/04/2013 22:15

Glad to hear you like them all Cece! Difficult to find a name that isn't super popular, hipstery or was popular for my generation!

Beau - OK
Amos - OK
Marvin - Hank or Paranoid Android
Fraser - OK
Rowan - like (are you OK with unisex?)
Flynn - like
Miles - OK
Roman - lovely, but goes with Russian ancestry
Casper - like
River - Song, from Doctor Who
Hector - lovely
Curtis - OK
Byron - OK
Otis - lift company
Chester - don't like
Orlando - OK

Laquila · 30/04/2013 22:24

Jasper - quite like
Beau - wouldn't advise this
Amos - like it, probably due a revival
Marvin - as for Amos
Fraser - love it
Rowan - love it but agree might be thought of as a girl
Flynn - really like it
Miles - quite like this, used to be v middle-class but becoming more classic
Roman - love it, not sure Russian ancestry is essential
Casper - friendly, also v middle-class
River - no
Hector - unusual enough to be interesting, quite like it on balance
Curtis - Stigers
Byron - no
Otis - not sure (trying to hard?)
Chester - v American
Orlando - quite like but a bit artsy bohemian

Jewcy · 30/04/2013 22:27

I love Hector and want it for myself but I am very broad Lancashire and cannot inflict 'ector on the poor sod.

I am very sorry but I don't like the rest of your names.

monsterchild · 30/04/2013 22:32

I've met dogs/cats/horses with all those names...

farmersdaughter · 30/04/2013 22:32

Fraser or Jasper, not hugely keen on the others.

I went to school with a Rowan (girl) and my BIL is Rohan. Think the 'H' is much better for a boy.

farmersdaughter · 30/04/2013 22:33

Ohh and Hector Smile

Kelly1992 · 30/04/2013 22:38

Jasper - Don't like.
Beau - I love this one as a middle.
Amos - Old man.
Marvin - It's cute but reminds of Marvin from JLS.
Fraser - I like this personally prefer Fraizer.
Rowan - Not a fan of Unisex names.
Flynn - NMS.
Miles - Personally prefer Myles.
Roman - NMS.
Casper - reminds me of Casper the friendly ghost.
River - Dont like.
Hector - I love this one.
Curtis - I like this.
Byron - Cute but NMS.
Otis - Its ok but not my fave.
Chester - Dont like place names as names.
Orlando - See above.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 30/04/2013 22:40

sweetestcup · 30/04/2013 23:00

Most of them are awful, as if people would be trying too hard to be different, its a child not a dog. Curtis and Fraser only 2 I would consider. River? Seriously?

thermalsinapril · 01/05/2013 01:04

My favourites from your list:

Jasper
Miles
Casper
Amos
Hector

emmyloo2 · 01/05/2013 05:00

Jasper - love this
Beau - really don't like this
Amos - too hipster, trendy for me
Marvin - don't like this
Fraser - love this
Rowan - ok
Flynn - overused along with Finn
Miles - ok but little dull
Roman - like this
Casper - love this
River - nope
Hector - adore this - my favourite of them all
Curtis - nope
Byron - nope
Otis - love this
Chester - actually really like this
Orlando - not unless you are Italian

OneFingerSjupesUpTheYoni · 01/05/2013 05:29

I only like fraser, sorry

BananaHammocks · 01/05/2013 06:01

MorphandChas yes also like Seth and Angus!

sweetestcup River is a guilty pleasure, very unlikely I'd ever actually use it! I also think they sound a bit trendy but all other names seem too popular, too boring or way too out there! Aaargh!

Not much of a consensus there! I agree that Beau and Rowan are too feminine and River is a bit too silly and Casper will invite too many 'friendly ghost' comments but nobody has pointed out anything too horrific about the others.

Most of them are names I already wouldn't use either for reasons that you have stated or because they don't work with surname.

Those of you who think they are too doggy/try-hard, whats woud you suggest? Are you tastes more mainstream/popular?

mummybare · 01/05/2013 06:21

My favourites are Flynn, Hector, Casper and Byron.

thekitchenfairy · 01/05/2013 06:25

Total bias... I have aRowan and we thought we would get stick for it but it is considered to be a 'strong' name round here... He suits his name and I am glad we had courage to go a little off the beaten track. Go with your instinct... He will grow into his name :))

Bearandcub · 01/05/2013 07:02

What about classic but under used names ie
Peter
Vaughan
Ivor
Alistair
Bennett
Adair
Blair or Blaine
Donald
Gary
Rory

Ok Gary was a joke. From your list I like Fraser and Rowan best. Jasper, beau, Hector are really too dependent on your area and accent to be first names but work well as middle names. Flynn is too popular. I prefer Kester to Chester. The rest are not for me.

rachel234 · 01/05/2013 07:02

I like Roman and Amos. Or how about Quentin or Tristan?

MortifiedAdams · 01/05/2013 07:03

The only one I like on there is Roman, but couldnt have it as my surname is (almost) Candle.

BananaHammocks · 01/05/2013 07:33

Bearandcub I don'y like names that are better known as surnames so that's Vaughan, Bennett, Blair and Blaine out. Peter, Alistair and Donald are too familiar and therefore boring to me due to being more popular for mine and my parents generations. Rory is a bit cutesy for me. Ivor and Adair are good suggestions unfortunately neither of them grab me!
