I didn't choose Adelaide...was I right?

Just a musing really. When I was pregnant with my now 18 month old, the girls name I liked the best was Adelaide. I didn't go for it for a whole host of reason....didn't want to saddle her with an unusual name not sure of reception from family and wondered how she would feel growing up in Sputh East London with such a name.

Anyway we went for another one which is completely differ net but still lovely with lots of lovely derivatives. But.... What do you think of Adelaide? Would you have rolled your eyes in private? Any other such names? My mum wanted Guinevere for me, but decided against for the same reasons.......

It reminds me of adenoid and also of a old Dublin hospital.

It's a name that gets chosen with a particular nn in mind (Addie) -- I don't know any Adelaides that are ever known by their full name. Parents who choose Adelaide have an aversion to Addison.

an old...

I don't like Adelaide, you made the right decision! It's an odd mix of frilly yet frumpy.

Sorry!

Laquila · 20/04/2013 09:29

I think Adelaide is pretty but I also like the others on your list, particularly Constance and Rosemary.

Could the posters mentioning Adeline please tell me whether it's pronounced A-deh-lyne or A-deh-leen? Thank you

I really like it.

Also like Della.

I know an Adelina.

simplesusan · 21/04/2013 23:05

I like Adelaide.
I also like most of the other names on your list too.

OneFingerSjupesUpTheYoni · 21/04/2013 23:16

I like all your other names except adelaide. It makes me think of australia.

nooka · 22/04/2013 04:45

I don't really like Adelaide. Partly because it makes me think of Great Aunt Adelaide from Nurse Matilda and she was a very unattractive character, and partly because I just don't think it's very attractive sounding. To me it's an old lady name that shouldn't come back (like Agnes, Gertrude or Maud).

Guinevere on the other hand is beautiful.

lulalullabye · 22/04/2013 04:54

Adelaide is the city where I live not a name Wink

diddl · 22/04/2013 07:26

Adelaide the city is named after a Queen Adelaide isn't it?

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper · 22/04/2013 09:28

No, I don't see it as a nice, attractive name at all.

The royal connotations have been completely overrun by the city-in-a-neighbouring-country-to-me connotations. I would even venture that it's a bit c-word where I come from.

"Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen (Adelaide Amelia Louise Theresa Caroline; 13 August 1792 ? 2 December 1849) was the queen consort of the United Kingdom and of Hanover as spouse of William IV of the United Kingdom. Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, is named after her."

She would indeed have been Adelheid to her German family.

mylittlepuds · 22/04/2013 20:26

I love Adelaide but you would have to be bold and prepared for the criticism behind your back - unfortunately that's always going to happen with unusual names. I think Adelaide as a middle name would be safe as middle names are there to be daring Smile

I'm in the US and Adelaide is actually getting a little common. There were two in my daughter's dance class. One went by Lydie and the other by Addy. It's a pretty name.

TheRealFellatio · 28/04/2013 19:52

Yes. It's a horrible name. Very hard sounding and inelegant. It's a mystery to me why it's suddenly so popular.

Rhubarbgarden · 28/04/2013 21:26

I like it. But I like all the names on your list do you've clearly got good taste.

amessagetoyouYoni · 28/04/2013 21:29

Your list is really nice. I do love Adelaide, though. Great name.
