We found out we are having a little girl so im driving myself mad trying to find a name as beautiful as our first born-lily. We like Eilidh but Its just the idea of it being mis pronounced that puts me off. Does it go with lily!? I also liked penelope but was put off as everyone else in family seems to hate the name!!

I'd pronounce it Ay-ly? It's a bit matchy-matchy with Lily if that is correct pronunciation.

TotallyEggFlipped · 14/03/2013 19:46

I love the name Eilidh! Go for it.

Silvertop · 14/03/2013 19:47

They sound too similar to me. Penelope shortened to Penny is quite sweet and would 'go' with Lily.

SheepNoisesOff · 14/03/2013 19:51

I don't know how to pronounce it (educate me!) but I would just ask if I came across the name, and after that it would be fine.

There will always be people who mispronounce your name. I have a bog-standard name in English and people here in the Netherlands always emphasise the wrong syllable. Yesterday I was chatting to an Englishwoman named Kate and she said Kate Middleton was the best thing that could have happened to her because until a few years ago here it was not uncommon for people to call her something sounding more or less like "carter". So I wouldn't worry about that aspect.

At school in Australia there was girl called Danielle and one of our teachers always called her Daniel Confused. Heaven knows what she would have made of Eilidh!

Have just read the Peter May novel set on the Isle of Lewis, and in his intro on Gaelic names,he says Eilidh is pronounced Ay-lay?

mathanxiety · 14/03/2013 20:08

Ailidh ('Ailey') is too close to Lily imo.

Penelope (nn Penny maybe) is very nice - sorry your family has pooh poohed it.

Shr0edinger · 14/03/2013 20:18

Eilidh is like Lily but with a bit missing. I don't think that works for sisters at all. They sound alike but are different styles. Pick a name in the same style but that sounds different.

Penny would work! Lily and Penny

SilverBirdie · 14/03/2013 20:19

Eilidh is gorgeous! I think people are known more face to face rather than on paper so therefore the pronounciation wouldn't put me off as when its heard its easy to remember if that makes sense? Smile

SecretNutellaFix · 14/03/2013 20:25

Eilidh is a gorgeous name, but it does sound very similar to Lily.

Maybe a bit too similar?

Leeds2 · 14/03/2013 20:28

I too think it is a lovely name, but just a bit too similar to Lily.

Jbck · 14/03/2013 20:58

My DDs have similar names with strong 'L' sounds and lots of friends family have commented on how they go well together. I think if you really like the names then they grow with the children and everyone will get used to the similarity but they'll be different because of the child they are attached to iyswim.
Mind you I knew two Marys who were siblings! Smile

GloriaPritchett · 14/03/2013 21:01

I've just tried to say Eilidh and Lily together and I find it quite difficult! It's a shame, it's lovely.

AmandaPayne · 14/03/2013 21:28

I am always a big advocate for choosing names for children, not choosing sibling pairs. But I do think those are rather similar sounding I'm afraid.

Ooh I wanted to call my sister Eilidh when she was born (I was six) except at the time I thought it was spelt Aily as that was how Enid Blyton spelt it.

Mum went for Amy, which might be an alternative?

idiot55 · 16/03/2013 20:21

lovely, doesnt matter if they sound alike, they are individuals so its fine.

Lily and Poppy always go together in my head!

Love Penny too.

How about Posy, Ruby or Ivy? -I stuck with a short name ending in y theme.
