What do you think? Genevieve or Zara?!

Hi there. I am due this Friday and having last minute doubts on DH and mine name choices :s

I love Genevieve but worry that as it's relatively unpopular people will think as a name it is too old fashioned. I know our name choice is up to us but I want friends and family to like the name we have picked and not think 'where did they get that from!'.

We also love Zara - and we're not bothered about the clothes store thing - but not sure that it is 'special' enough.

DD is likely to be very fair and blue eyed due to DH and mine genetics, do you think both these names go? please can you reassure me in some way!! which name would you pick out of the two?

thanks!!

Genevieve, I love that name.

zara is nice but I keep thinking of the clothes shop.

zingally · 10/03/2013 17:44

Not keen on either. But would choose Zara out of the two.

I have a G. We get a wonderful reaction from people - think people love a classic name that is not so popular. It's not old fashioned though in the way that Edith etc are. Lends itself to lots of nicknames too that can make it less formal if you wish - Viv, Vivvi, VeeVee, Evie etc as well as Gen variants.

PhyllisDoris · 10/03/2013 17:52

Vivi and Veevee make me think of lady bits! Grin

Love Genevieve. Such a graceful, elegant name. But one with plenty nickname potential in case she turns out to be a tomboy and doesn't want to be elegant!

Happiestinwellybobs · 10/03/2013 18:32

Love both actually but think Genevieve is the nicer of the two. A classic name that I don't think will date :)

Sleepyfergus · 10/03/2013 18:35

We wanted G as an option for dd2 but close friends used it Hmm

Love it!!

Less keen on Zara, reminds me of the shop, but it is a pretty name

BeeBopDingALing · 10/03/2013 18:41

Dislike Genevieve. Zara is nice and a bit different without being weird.

OkayHazel · 11/03/2013 00:36

Zara is far more sophisticated and sexy! I imagine a very beautiful woman.

Whereas Genevieve just seems frumpy and old before it's time to me.

MinnesotaNice · 11/03/2013 00:39

I prefer Genevieve, by far over Zara. Might be a little biased since I have a good friend by that name. Smile

MidnightMasquerader · 11/03/2013 01:10

I love them both - you have fabulous taste in girls' names!

I have heard that French people cringe a bit when Genevieve is pronounced not in the French way, but so be it, really. It does seem more than a little affected to French it up of you're not French. :) Apols for the number of time I used the word 'French' in that paragraph.

I don't think it's old-fashioned at all; it's a lovely, substantial name which so many names of this era are not.

Zara is a great name too - timeless and elegant.

MaggieMaggieMaggieMcGill · 11/03/2013 01:18

For me, Genevieve every time, it was one of the names I gave serious consideration to.

DessieLou · 11/03/2013 03:39

Love both but Genevieve wins for me. Very elegant & timeless. Zara was on our list though so either are good!

SuckingDiesel · 11/03/2013 03:49

Love both but Genevieve slightly has the edge for me.

smileyhappymummy · 11/03/2013 04:58

I love genevieve - seriously considered it for dd2. Zara is fine too but don't love it in the same way.

Nicole007 · 11/03/2013 08:36

Thank you everyone for all the advice, helped to calm me down!

Genevieve (with a nn of Eve or Evie) gets my vote.

I cannot stand the name Zara. Sorry.

lottiegarbanzo · 11/03/2013 08:50

Love Genevieve. It's unusual but recognisable, versatile, memorable and to me, conjures an image of someone vivacious, fun but dignified. I suppose it sounds like joi de vivre. Works for a grown up and child.

SuckingDiesel · 11/03/2013 09:35

The Genevieve I know usually gets called Gen or Genny as a nickname so lots of possibilities for nns.
