If you didn't have a name at birth, when/ how did you name dc?

We knew we were having a boy and had a list of 6- ish possibles; now ds is here, he doesn't seem to suit any of them! Hmm

I know you have forty days to decide, but I was just wondering, if you didn't decided on a name straight away/ have one picked in advance, what was it that helped you decide?

We were like that..we booked a registration date as late as possible and every night sat down at the table with the baby and pretended he was called different names until we settled on one.My advice though..don't let people know you have no idea ,say you are deciding between 2 & will tell everyone when you know, otherwise you will get all sorts of "helpful" suggestions particularly from family which made the whole thing worse..
In the end we went with names with family links anyway.

With No1 son, we were the same, we had a couple of choices but neither seemed suitable. He was born just as the graduate lists were published in the newspaper so we said we would choose a name from them so eliminated all the girls and then scored out names we didn't like or were unsuitable (chinese etc :)) and we were basically left with a choice of 2, Gregor or Craig. So we picked one of those. No2 son was born 13 months later so we didn't bother trying to choose anything in advance and our alternate choice for No1 sounded too similar to use it as well. He was a week and a half old before we got round to naming him - we just both wrote down 5 names each on a piece of paper and passed them back and forward eliminating names off each list until we were left with one on each list, Keir and Ciaran - so we compromised on Ciar :)

We had shortlists for DS1 and DS2 and waited to see them before deciding. We had tried the names out loud quite a lot beforehand and had told family the shortlists beforehand to hear other people say them. Yes, the family gave 'helpful' comments regarding how much they liked or disliked them, but I truly couldn't give a monkeys what others may or may not like, so this wasn't a problem for us. Our shortlists were quite unusual names so, for us, it was helpful to hear others say them. Good luck! Smile

I had a head name and a heart name - DH preferred the more sensible version but wasn't too bothered really. Took two days to convince him to go for the more daring option.

Really glad/interesting to hear others struggled too&how you decided- I'd love to know what you eventually picked/ your main contenders for boys.

We don't mind waiting&getting it right but others (especially grandparents&close family) seem more bothered by this than us- hey ho!

In the meantime, he has a silly nickname that he totally suits but defo wouldn't work as a proper name. I'll let you know when we decide but, as I said, I'd love to hear what you all decided on/ main contenders were.
