Full version and short versions of names. When do you use them - if ever?

Or did you name your baby with the intention of only using the nn?

One of the names we are thinking about for our baby daughter has both a long and short version. We do like the long version and would probably use it but think day to day it'll be the nn that we call her the most.

Does anyone never use the full version but just wanted it on the their child's brith certificate?

Loads of my friends! I chose to use shortened names for both my boys, and the short names are on their birth certificates, but I have friends who have done both.

I did - I have a Frederick known as Freddie. I like having the family history of the full name and that it gives DS some choices when he is older

Ds1 has full name on bc but is known by the nn including at school. It gives him options when he is older.

Our baby hasn't been called the real version yet. Shes going to get a right shock when she finds out her name. Better start using it!

DS5 is the only one of mine that goes by the shortened version of his name. He is called it at school too, though this year his stuff is labelled with his full name (in Reception they asked me and labelled it with his nn as that's all he was used to being called)

I do call him by his full name too sometimes, but me and DH are really the only ones who do.

Named DS Samuel, with intention of using Sam most of the time...
And "SAMUEL!!!!" when he's in trouble!
