Use DD1s middle name as DD2s first name?

DD1 has Catherine as a middle name, but I like Katie (and using full names...) but wonder if using the same name is a but odd. DH says use Katherine, but that seems weirder. What other full names shorten to

Caitlin
Katrina

I think DD2 will feel shortchanged that you couldn't think of a name specifically for her.

FaffTastic · 17/02/2013 06:16

Catalina
Katelyn
Kate

I wouldn't use Catherine/Katherine if it's your other daughters middle name - not sure why, just seems a bit unoriginal

FaffTastic · 17/02/2013 06:20

Also, can you not just have Katie/Katy on its own? Why does it have to be a nickname for a longer version name? It wouldn't strike me as odd if one child was called Katie and the other had the middle name Katherine. Plus, not many people on the planet, outside of immediate family, will know or remember your DD1's middle name.

MortifiedAdams · 17/02/2013 06:24

I know a few Katie / Kates where this is their whole name and it feels like a name in its own right to me.

Dolallytats · 17/02/2013 07:13

I have 3 sisters and all of us share a name at some point!! I've never thought about it in a negative way, nor have my sisters. If anything we like it!!

fridayschild · 17/02/2013 07:20

I would try really hard to find another name I think. Each child needs her own identity. I have two boys quite close in age and it felt like we had used all the best names on DS1, so DS2 got the names we'd rejected previously. But you will love your daughter, and whatever name you give her will become more lovely as a result, because it is her name.

My DD2 has DD1's middle name! . DD1 was old enough to protest briefly but now sees it as a link between her and her beloved sister. DD2 has yet to comment but I seriously doubt anyone will care by then.

lesserspottedshitehawk · 17/02/2013 07:53

A friend of mine has his brothers first and second name just the opposite way around. He's a titchy bit resentful.

I'd try really hard to think of a similar alternative.

goodygumdrops · 17/02/2013 08:14

I think its nice actually. Like a family link, especially as girls often change their surname on marriage.

Kelerina · 17/02/2013 08:42

No.....there are so many names out there, pick another!

Mrsrobertduvall · 17/02/2013 08:44

A bit unimaginative.
Dh has sibling twins called Robert David and David Robert which I think is ridiculous.

AThingInYourLife · 17/02/2013 08:44

I don't really see why it matters.

But then I'm from a country where sometimes all the children in the family (including the boys) would be given the middle name Mary.

AThingInYourLife · 17/02/2013 08:45

"Dh has sibling twins called Robert David and David Robert which I think is ridiculous."

:o

That's kind of brilliant.

bubbles1231 · 17/02/2013 08:47

OP just asked my children about this (10 &12). They both thought it would be too weird and DS2 said he would want his own name, not his brother's.

baskingseals · 17/02/2013 09:20

i read the name Catienne on a thread the other day, and thought it was lovely.

i also love Katerina, would you consider either of those op?

Calabria · 17/02/2013 09:23

Go for it but spell it properly. Katharine.

Why yes, that is my name, how did you guess? Grin

lesserspottedshitehawk · 17/02/2013 10:25
