Is Elsa a name in its own right?

Dh and I really like the name Elsa but I'm not keen on shortened versions of names and all the name books seem to agree that Elsa is a version of Elizabeth. Eliza to me is definitely a shortened version although a very nice name and was wondering if Elsa is a nn too. Any thoughts much appreciated.

I've seen it given as a whole name. It may have derived from Elizabeth orginally, but I don't think people now would think 'oh, its short for Elizabeth'.

I think Elsa is a name in its own right. But even more so I think Eliza is a name in its own right. And I think Eliza is more beautiful.

Obviously I am massively biased as my DD is Eliza, but Elsa is also lovely . An alternative is the Scottish Ailsa which has a similar sound.

It's a name in its own right. I think it's lovely and I prefer it to elizabeth or Eliza. I also like Elise.

I'm very much not one for giving shortened names as actual names, but I definitely think Elsa is now a name in its own right. :)

Elsa is not.short for anything. It's a name in its own right.

I like it. Far nicer than boring Elizabeth imo.

I think it's been a name for some time... It certainly was in Agatha Christie's day - main character in Five Little Pigs (a Poirot one I think)!

Yes. I love it and had it on my list for dd2 but it didn't suit her in the end.

I'd consider both Elsa and Eliza to be names in their own right. I prefer Elsa to Elizabeth or Eliza.

Elsa is definitely a name in its own right. I am Ailsa which is the Scottish spelling

Very pretty and def name in its own right. Even if it were a shortened name, it has most certainly become the norm to put the name you like/want on birth cert rather than the lengthened version which will most likely only be used officially.
