Would it be cruel?

I'm not actually pregnant yet so this is all a bit pie in the sky at the moment but we're TTC and I suddenly had the perfect name flash into my head if we were to have another boy. It is, I'll be the first to admit, a name which can be construed as a bit posh while myself and DH are anything but (16yr old Ford Fiesta, 1970s 3 bed semi in Wiltshire). And yet somehow it just sounds perfect. So, would it be cruel to call a boy who is going to go to a bog standard comprehensive and, if he takes after either myself or DH will not have the skills or strength to fend off bullies........

Hugo?

Brother of Thomas, 3 syllable surname beginning with B.

Be honest. I love love love it.

My friend has a little boy called Hugo and he's lovely :)

It'll be your baby so if you like it, use it! Regardless of what anyone else thinks :)

Good luck ttc :) :)

Hugo is quite popular in here in Spain and also France, we've met quite a few and they are real cheeky chappies, it's a lovely name.

Most names considered 'posh' a few years ago - e.g. Hugo, Sebastian, Quentin - are now becoming more 'normal' as they are used more often. This trend of 'filtering down' is explained well in Freakonomics. So I think Hugo is fine and not cruel.

I think of your 3 syllable surname beginning with B is Bullingdon then, yes, it would sound posh Smile

How on earth can a 3 syllable surname be posher than a short one? Ours is only one syllable - is that chav then?

What is wrong with 'posh' Confused? Seriously, I don't understand...?!

Poppydaisy I mentioned the length of the surname so you could imagine the rhythm of the name, not because I think it's posh!

HelloKitty Thanks for the tip - do you think Hugo will be common soon then (I mean as in "well used" not chav!)

Patricia and BonaDea thank you, this is reassuring!

I adore Hugo and it was on our list if this baby was going to be a boy. I think it's fabulous.

Goes perfectly with your surname, and with older brother's name :) one of my wee cousins is called Hugo, and he's ace, so I like the name anyway.

Cruel...? No, not at all.

Nice, solid name - but very popular these days.
