your thoughts on the name Latifah?

I was wondering if I could use it as a middle name for our DD. The first name and the surname are rather plain. We have spent some time in the Middle East and have a good friend called Latifah, I also absolutely adore the meaning - "kind, gentle, delicate". However I am worried that in the English-speaking world the "ghetto" connotations would be too strong. What do you think?

I think you're right to doubt the use of it tbh. People just think of Queen Latifah...why not use Letitia instead?

The 'ghetto' connection is pretty strong with me. However, I suppose if you are using it as a middle name it will rarely come up - I don't know most folks' middle names.

I dunno, I tend to think 'anything goes' when it comes to middle names. Don't get me wrong - I'm as conservative as they come when it comes to baby names. DS and DD both have family names for their first and middle names, but I accept that's not for everyone.

I'm far more impressed when someone goes for a lovely family connection, or a really whacky, unusual, but interesting (for them) middle name, instead of defaulting to Rose/May/Mae/Grace/yawn.

Why not use it, how nice to see something a bit exotic. 'Ghetto' wouldn't occur to me, tbh.

When people on this thread say ghetto, do they mean black?

And is the point to avoid names that might - shock! -make people 'suspect' your DD is black?
