Whatever name we decide on, someone close to us and the baby doesn't like it....

So, first we decided on Juno...several people's response was, "you can't call a girl/human Juno". And yes, it's sad but it matters to me because these people are very close to me and will be to the bubba.

Then I was convinced on Tabitha, it's cute, I like the nicknames even if they are cat like (what's wrong with cats anyway?), but Grandma made a massive scene..."it's a cats name!!!! it's horrendous, oh no no no!" DH also not keen so I abandoned that one.

Then I thought, maybe Lara - success, everyone likes it.........except DH! Oh crap. Moving on....

Matilda, a name everyone reacted well to, including DH. But then I discovered my Aunt (who again I am very close to) doesn't like it. She doesn't like the nicknames for it either, and now I am thinking, 'hmm, I'm not keen on the nicknames - Tilly/Tilda/Mattie'.

Maybe Juliet? Love it, but DH doesn't.

Yes, I'm a pleb. It shouldn't matter what others think. Tell me what a knob I am.

Don't tell anyone until baby arrives, then they can't say anything.

amazingmumof6 · 01/02/2013 09:53

Acts 9:36 (KJV)
"Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did"

We have a niece called Tabitha and she is gorgeous!!definitely go for it!!!!

I can't say I like Juno - there was that film about pregnant teenage girl, just don't like the association

also Matilda is lovely too!

whose baby is it, though?
call her what you like and sod the rest!Grin

amck5700 · 01/02/2013 10:25

Tell them you have definitely decided on Esmerelda and wont be swayed and then whatever you call her will be a pleasant surprise :O

Seriously though, stop telling people!! The only people who should be deciding what your baby is called is you and your husband - everyone else had the chance to name their own babies/pets etc.

All the names suggested are lovely, pick one you both like and announce it when the baby is born. They will love your daughter and grow to love the name, because it is hers. My mum disliked my younger son's name - she got over it pretty quickly and whilst it wouldn't have been her choice - she had 7 kids and her choices would not have been mine either!

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 01/02/2013 10:26

Oh for goodness sake you never ask opinions or even tell people the name in RL until after the baby is born.

Is not your aunts baby,or your mothers, they have had their turn at naming baby's,now it's your turn.
It only matters that you and your DH can agree on a name, not everyone else in your social circle.
You will never find a name to please everyone!

Once the baby is born, and she has been given the name you have choosen,no one will ever mention it again,it will be her name, and they will love it,because they will love Her.

peachypips · 01/02/2013 10:28

Have your original choice, Juno. It's beautiful. Announce after the birth with a look that will challenge anyone to make a comment. No one should dare cross a new mum with hormones!

I echo what they say. Do not tell anyone. It's your choice and also, all the associations currently held re that name will disappear as your "Juno" becomrs the predominant association with that name.

Good luck with it all.

Twogoodreasons · 01/02/2013 10:34

I was going to say what Heyho said. I think the process of choosing your baby's name is nature's way of preparing you for the resolve you need in parenting to do what you think is best for your DC and not give a flying f*8? what anyone else thinks.

willyoulistentome · 01/02/2013 10:36

You choose what YOU like. Half your elderly relatives will be dead within ten years so what does it matter what they think?

Sorry that was a bit blunt, I know,but.....

oddslippers · 01/02/2013 10:36

For what it's worth I didn't like the names my sis choose for all three of her children, but they are her children and I love her and them so I smiled and got on with it. Over time I've grown to like the names too, your family need to grow up, it's entirely your and your dh choice.

amazingmumof6 · 01/02/2013 10:39

what's wrong with Esmeralda? it means emerald in Spanish and both that and the name are beautiful!Smile

but the idea is good, I used to say a boy will "Button" or a girl will be "Ribbon" - coz I love sewing!

they left it at that....

BigGums · 01/02/2013 10:44

I think they are great names!! You'll never please everyone so you may as well go for your favourite.

amck5700 · 01/02/2013 10:49

sorry amazingmumof6 I was struggling to come up with a name that people wouldn't like but clearly failed :o It's a bit of a struggle since all the "awful" old fashioned names are now popular - almost put Mavis......

HillBillySillyBilly · 01/02/2013 10:49

There is no name out there that will be universally liked by everyone......that is why there are so many names out there! Pick a name that you and your dh love. BTW I love Juno, Tabitha and Matilda.

mummabug · 01/02/2013 10:50

Thanks guys :) I will keep my mouth shut from now on. It's true, there's aalways someone that doesn't like a name, and once she's born they will HAVE to grow to like it, or not say anything!

I am one of those awful people that has to talk through everything with everyone I'm close to, and then I can't make up my mind! Must learn to just make my own decisions.....but that's a whole other story. Thanks everyone xx

our newest nephew is a week old, so saying "baby Matthew" is so weird, but not because of the name, but because he is a whole new person we haven't got used to yet! (gorgeous boy!)

and his parents are really struggling to get used to saying he/him/his after 3 girls!!!!Grin

They are just as shocked that they have a boy as we were having when we had a girl after 5 boys! she's 9 months old, but I still find the whole "pink chaos" just unreal!

so yes, any name will be "strange" at first, but just call her what you want - and refer her to with that name from the moment she's born. you and the world will get used to it!

(just don't call her Feline, please)

NigelMolesworth · 01/02/2013 10:54

YOUR baby, YOUR choice.

Don't tell anyone.

(I like your choices BTW Grin)

amazingmumof6 · 01/02/2013 10:55

amck I know, I know you meant something really unusual -and that's just it, nothing is that unusual anymore!Grin

apart from "4real" or "Sick"

amck5700 · 01/02/2013 11:16

amazingmumof6 Ha Ha - I am still waiting for L8on to kick off in the popularity stakes.

nicelyneurotic · 01/02/2013 21:21

Tabitha is a fab name.

neolara · 01/02/2013 21:26

Can I just say you have lovely choices in names. (I have a Lara Juliet.)

And yes, don't tell anyone until you've decided and your baby is born.

TimothyClaypoleLover · 01/02/2013 23:32

You and your DH are naming your baby so stuff what anyone else thinks. Inlaws and my parents didn't like the name I called my DS but now love it because they love him. People can be very fickle about names.

farmersdaugther · 03/02/2013 16:55

Stuff anyone else and pick the name you and DH like.

Love love Juno btw

Smile
exoticfruits · 03/02/2013 17:06

I never know why people discuss it with others first-announce it afterwards. I don't like Juno-but it is up to you entirely!

LazyMachine · 03/02/2013 17:12

All you've listed are great names. So, choose one and DON'T TELL ANYONE UNTIL AFTER SHE'S ARRIVED!!! Grin
