How many female Alex and how many male Alex do you know?
If you saw the name Alex in the internet/newspaper without knowing the person, would you think the Alex is a male or female?

I wouldn't necessarily know. It could be either. Surely most girl Alex's are actually Alexandra's or Alexas and shortened. I like it as a name and I know a few who are nice!

I was wary of picking a name that wasn't obvious girl or boy eg Sam, Alex, Cody

Dd1's middle name is Alexandra. My best friend is one too, she goes by Alex. Also know quite a few female Alex's, a couple young but mostly my age or older (30). I don't actually know any males named Alex (except an ex-boyfriend who was Alexei).

I love it as a girls name.

DD is Alexandra but always known as Alex. We chose the name as it can be either sex - as can my name, and I've always rather liked the idea that my name doesn't 'label' me.

From time to time DD says she wishes we'd have called her Lexie or Sandie, but on the whole, likes her name.

I love the name Alex and would call a DD just Alex. DH isnt keen so I would need to work.on that.

I really really dont like it as a boys name, and wouldnt assume it was a boy if I heard someone talking about an Alex.

Would anyone name your daughter Alex? (not nickname, just the word "Alex" as a real name)?

have a friends called Samantha, Philippa and Charlotte - they are known as Sam, Phil and Charlie

love the people, find the nicknames confusing.

My dd has a friend called Alex. Not sure if she's officially an Alexandra.

bringmeroses · 01/02/2013 12:23

I used to work with an Alexandra who was Alex. She was a Bee-Atch.

I love the name though.

And I know quite a few female adult Sams - don't find it odd at all. Samantha is a common name amongst 30-40 year olds.
