Name-related dilemma

We're both really set on a girl's name for imminent DC and we have one old friend with a daughter with the same name. We don't see them much as they don't live nearby, so I don't feel that 'stealing' the name is an issue, but we were thinking of asking her to be a godparent - is that weird though to have a daughter and god-daughter with the same name?

Are there no variations on the name?

Not really, not that we really like. It is likely we might go with different nn but the other is called by her full name.

If it's too weird I suppose we could ask this friend to be a godmother next time around (I don't think she would be expecting it)

Is it an unusual name of a "Top 10" name? The answer to that would change my answer.

Not unusual - more like top 50.

Why don't you call your DC the name you love and ask your friend before the birth if she would be godparent.

Say that you have decided to call your baby X as you love the name and you know she'll understand as obviously she loves it too. What would make things even better is if she would be godparent, as it all seems so serendipitous.

By the way, my child is called something that apparently about four children were called in the UK in the last two years. It isn't an unusual name in my country of origin but it is here. A friend called her child the same name four months later. She has no link to that country at all and obviously knew my DS was called it as we are friends.

She has never mentioned it to me. Not even "oh yes we loved that name too" so we always had our heart set on using it.

I find that situation a little strange as it's so unusual as a name. But it's only a name. And she can call her child whatever she likes as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry. Last post was really dull. I'm heavily pregnant and a bit challenged in the brain area.

:) To me that is a bit odd as well. If anyone uses a name I've always liked and might potentially use in the future I always say 'Oh what a lovely name, that is one of our favourites' just to lay a bit of groundwork!
