Melody for a girl?

What say you? I do love hippy-ish names and I think it's the most hippy-ish name dp would let me get away with (Summer was vetoed). It's not a mame I've heard elsewhere yet plus I quite like the Dr Who reference

I think it's pretty.
Wouldn't use it my self but would like it on someone else's child.

I liked it when pregnant with dd1 but dp hated it. In retrospect, I think he was right.

Haven't given much thought to a middle name yet, but the surname will be a 'Mac', so it would be alliterative. I do like it, just worried in case it was a bit too much of a hippy name.

I agree with Harrysmummy. I wouldn't use it myself bit would admire it if introduced to a little melody. I went to school with a harmony, always thought that was pretty.

i love it. your child will be who she is and she will grow to suit her name so never mind if someone else thinks its a trailer park name whatever that means. i have an alliterative name and love that it is so dont be put off by that.

I think it's a GORGEOUS name! Though I'm not sure whether it would pass the Bank Of England test... (can you imagine someone with this name on the board of governors at the BoE?) It's adorable though. Would you consider Elodie? Sounds the same but suits all ages perhaps more than Melody does.

Well 5 out of 8 isn't too bad (and thanks jumpingjacksprat ) Elodie is lovely too Icy, but I'm not sure it would go so well with the Scottish surname. I like the idea of Melody Mac*** it's sounds more...well musical.

(Also, am I the only one who (geekily) thinks of Melody Pond/River Song?)

I went to school with a Melody, unfortunately she was very shy and forgettable so it's sounds very passive to me.

I think it seems to suit you and she can use Mel later if she wants.

We have a cat called Melody. She was named after Melody Nelson and became Melody Kitten. DH is a huge Serge Gainsbourg fan.

I like it, and, yes, it would make me think of Doctor Who. In a good way- Melody/River is a great character.

(BTW, I'm expecting DC3 any day now. If it's a boy it'll be called Rory, after the Doctor Who character)

Melody is very sweet, though I can't imagine it on a woman of 30+ years, unless she's an arty or hippy type.

IMHO, Elodie is a really nice alternative; one that will age better.

I also think Elodie goes better with your 'Mac' surname, as Melody MacDonald, Melody Mackenzie is too alliterative to my ears.

Love it. Makes me think of Doctor Who. Like AnathemaDevice said, she's a really cool character, so either people will make that link and love it or not make the link and just like the name.

Thanks for all the lovely comments/input Think we probably will go with Melody for a girl; I'm a big hippy and DP's a big Doctor Who fan, so it's works out well.

i know a melody who is 9 and she gets the full melody. thats because her mum is a PITA about it.

Not sure it'll stick once she is away from mamma though

I think it's a very pretty name. Didn't make me think hippy, but I did immediately think dr who! I disagree that it won't age well or that it will necessarily get abbreviated. As for the Bank of England test, seriously, when competing against all the Alfies and Poppys of this generation, melody will look positive conservative!

I really like it and I've only ever known one other child called Melody. Not so keen on Mel though.

DD3 was very nearly Harmony (Hari)

It's quite a nice name in theory but don't think I would use it myself.

It's pretty. And the fact that she can shorten it to Mel if she turns out to be a bit straight laced is also a massive bonus.

Have 3 girls and name them Melody, Lyric and Harmony.
