Flora - margarine connection?

I really love the name Flora if DC3 ends up being a girl but DH is convinced that the margarine association would make her life a misery. I think the margarine has been around so long that it would pass people by.

Opinions on this?

(Florence even more of a no no for DH due to David Cameron connection).

I used to like the continental name Florian but was startled when told it's actually a boy's name.

I like the name but still think of the margarine connection, sorry! Would be just like it too for the company to do a big advertisment in the future which could bring the whole marg thing back to the masses.

Florence is a nice compromise, also Fern.

I really really like the name. Totally agree with you that the margarine association is very old news and therefore not an issue.

I know a few Floras of different ages and it's never occurred to me the brand name would be an issue, certainly not to the extent of putting people off using it - surely it's too well established as a girl's name to be sidelined by a spread?! Really pretty, without being frilly - great name.

Coral is a similar name. I like flora though. I like what it means, it was a word and a name long before the margerine!!

Oh I love Flora! It's on our short list for DC3 due in 6 weeks. I have asked people about the margarine thing - my MIL thinks it'll be a real problem most other people seem fairly mixed. DH nit convinced because of our surname but I love it - the goddess of flowers, suits every age, it's a happy, pretty name.

Nah, all these margarine associations are from the 1980's. It was so heavily advertised back then.

It's a lovely name, and I know exactly what you mean about fleurgh.

One of my favourite girls names. Don't think of margarine first, I'd think Flora MacDonald! But I am Scottish. Grin

I so want a girl so I can call her Flora.

Because people are lazy and have a tendency to shorten names, some will drop the 'a' at the end and you might find her being referred to as Flor (floor) x

IME most people shorten Flora or Florence to Flossie, which is quite sweet Smile

I know a Flora very well, and she hates her name. Got the margarine jokes at primary school, and the 'spreads well' jokes at secondary, then studied biology at uni and got lots of 'gut flora' and 'vaginal flora' jokes. Bloody miserable. She wanted to be called Jessica BTW.

Oh, and she gave her children very very common names as a result of her stupid name.

not talking about myself at all here, oh no

I love the name flora but the spreadable margarine bit plus interflora put me off. Sorry.

I also liked Cora, cara, Rowan, Rowena, Clara.

Flora isn't a stupid name at all. It's really lovely but I feel for you, Kveta. Do you not think that children will find anything to tease about though? Had it not been your name it might have been your eyelashes being too far apart or your knees being too sharp? I mean, they'll find anything?

It wouldn't be quite so bad if flora margarine weren't quite such a foul tasting product AND ruining a lovely name for so many.

Personally, I think companies should be banned from using people's names for any of their products.

Call me controlling!
