What do you think? It is a version of Rolf.

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 12/01/2013 21:50

Just no

FelicityWasSanta · 12/01/2013 21:51

King Rollo! Amazing! Haven't thought of him for years.

But no, not for your child.

pinkandyellowbutterfly · 12/01/2013 22:59

sounds like a mucky but loveable puppy. Rowan? Rory? Rupert? Roger? Roland? Robert? Ronald? All could be shortened to a nn of Rollo if you're brave enough it fits :-)

pinkandyellowbutterfly · 12/01/2013 23:01

However, King Rollo is a very cute 'bump' name!

metimeatlast · 13/01/2013 00:12

really wouldnt pick Rollo, sorry.

discorabbit · 13/01/2013 00:13

would mark you out as a pretentious arse

SashaSashays · 13/01/2013 02:56

But is it Roh-lo as in rhymes with hollow or as in Row-lo.

You really need to think about this in certain accents, friends DH is called Roland, nn Roly. My natural pronunciation of this is Role-ee when it should be said Row-lee. I would naturally read and pronounce Rollo as Row-lo and so would most people with my accent.

Also it does have fat and posh, sort of Billy Bunter type connotations

LoopsInHoops · 13/01/2013 03:08

Confused sasha - Roh-lo is the same as Row-lo to me, and Role-ee is the same as Row-lee. Confused

SashaSashays · 13/01/2013 03:27

Sorry Loops I'm struggling. Think of someone with a nice and common sounding East London/Essex accent.

Roh-lo= rhymes with hollow so rollow?
Row-lo= rolo the sweets but in my accent has quite a long 'o' so a pronounced w sound

And then yeah am struggling to explain the other bit just that friends husband (all have quite posh almost RP type accents) pronounce Roly differently to me. Maybe their version is holy and mine is hole-ee, so again longer 'O' sound.

Its hard to articulate on here but theres a noticeable difference (they correct me on it all the time) between my way and people who speak like me as well as some of their more 'accented' friends than how they typically pronounce it.

WildRumpus · 13/01/2013 03:28

I love Rollo

HavingALittleFaithBaby · 14/01/2013 02:02

I think the poor boy would endure a childhood of mockery..

delilah88 · 14/01/2013 14:20

It is pronounced Rol (like 'Poll' of 'Poll Tax') -- lo

Fine... If he's a dog.

nannyof3 · 14/01/2013 14:41

Please not

SashaSashays · 14/01/2013 17:04

Sounds weird how you've said it's pronounced but whatever, either way its bloody awful to be honest.

Has posh fat public schoolboy type connotations and if that isn't the sort of environment he will be growing up in I think e will have the piss well and truly ripped. Deservedly of course as its really like something you'd call a chubby dog.

ThinkAboutItOnBoxingDay · 14/01/2013 17:10

Rollo existed! He was a Viking leader and hero. Our royal family is descended from him (he was the ancestor to the normans).

But probably tough for a kid to argue this point when being teased....
