Are there as many babies with top ten names as there used to be?

Does that make sense? Basically, in the 70s/ 80s, names like Karen, Sarah etc were popular - were there more babies with those names than there are with todays top ten names e.g. Jessica, Emily etc. Is there a greater range of names these days therefore fewer babies with each name?

Just trying to get an idea of how prevalent the top ten names are these days as compared with the most popular names of my generation.

I think it depends a lot of the area. My DS is called Harry which is always in top 5 but he is the only one in his 70 place nursery and I only know one other young harry.

Conversely Kyle isn't that high on the list but locally there are lots of them

Are there lists anywhere that go back that far and say how many babies per name? I'm sure there's more variety now!

I'm not sure that there is publicly available data going back that far.

I think my total guess would be that there are similar numbers of the really popular names as there were in the 80s, but a much sharper tail off. I suspect that far fewer babies have, say, the 25th most popular name now than did in the 80s. As I said, total guess though.
