Kit or Freddie?

My shortlist for DS, (hopefully agreed to by DH) is now down to two names. What do people prefer out of Kit or Freddie?

He would have a full name on birth certificate but we'd always be calling him by the diminutive.

Trouble I'm having is that I'm finding it hard to imagine a baby Kit - only one aged about 7 and over - whereas I find it hard to imagine an adult Freddie.

Thank you!

I love Kit! What would you use as the full names?

almapudden · 05/01/2013 11:18

I like both! . Kit is more unusual than Freddie - not in a weird way, but Freddie is quite commonplace nowadays, I think. That said, I marginally prefer Freddie (Frederick as long form) to Kit.

Clary · 05/01/2013 11:19

There will be lots of adult Freddies in about 20 years Grin

I like both tbh, Kit I assume is Christopher which offers lots of options when he is older if he doesn't like Kit. I like Freddie better tho Grin but it is more popular hereabouts, I only know one young Chris who is sometimes known as Kipper or Kiffer.

schplappo · 05/01/2013 11:21

Thanks Penguins!

Kit would be Henry Christopher (Henry is a family name and one of my all time favourites but given its popularity and our surname, I don't really want him to end up having to be known by his complete full name all the way through school, plus Kit is my favourite NN).

Freddie would be Frederick David Richard (David and Richard are also family names; wouldn't use them with Henry Christopher as four names seems far too many except for the royal family!)

Thanks Alma and Clary too - computer v slow to refresh so didn't see your messages.

If Kit, he wouldn't really get the other Christopher options since that would be his middle name but if he wanted to use Henry or any of its diminutives he could (all of which I love).

I had thought the same that maybe there are quite a lot of young Freddies out there at the moment although I guess with boys names, unless you're brave and go for something very unusual, that's nearly always the case. It always seems to me that there's less choice with boys names!

Kit- by a country mile.

FoxyRevenger · 05/01/2013 11:38

Kit by miles. It's my fantasy boy name but my son came after my daughter, who is Kate...

PersuedByPenguins · 05/01/2013 11:40

Definitely Kit now I have seen full names!

Clary · 05/01/2013 11:54

Why not make his first name Christopher though? Well he could still lengthen his middle name when older if he liked it better I guess. I love Henry too.

schplappo · 05/01/2013 13:14

Thanks everyone.

Don't plan to use Christopher as his first name because it's not my favourite name. This is going to be our last child (or at least that's the plan!) and will be our only daughter so I want to give him a name that we love. Whilst I think Henry Christopher sounds lovely, I don't like Christopher enough to reverse the order. But I love Kit and I thought that this way I get to use favourite NN and a first name we both love. I wasn't sure about Kit for a baby but your positive comments are all very helpful!

Kit definitely. Love it, and don't hear it anything near enough.

DH vetoed because of Knight Rider Hmm

LadyLetch · 06/01/2013 19:15

Love it. Henry Christopher is fab too.

My Godson is known by a nickname of his middle name. AFAIK it causes no problems and he is always known as the nn, even at school.

kitsmummy · 06/01/2013 20:19

Why not just call him Kit if you don't like Christopher? My Kit is just a Kit, people love his name!

kitsmummy · 06/01/2013 20:19

And I should also have added that, strangely enough, he's actually Kit Frederick!

schplappo · 06/01/2013 20:30

Kit Frederick is lovely. I really want to use a full name on the birth certificate though and Henry is a family name (plus one of my favourites) hence wanting to use that.

The car in Knight Rider was pretty cool though from what I remember so I don't mind him having the same nickname!

If you call him Kit you will, really, have an extroardinary number of people asking if you named him Kit because you are a massive Knight Rider fan!!!

And I once had a lovely, very down to earth Northener ask me (in a very bemused, clearly struggling and trying to understand voice) why I called him Kit (you could almost hear the thoughts in his head "why did you call him Kit? There must be a reason, it can't possibly be just a name you like") Grin

ZooAnimals · 06/01/2013 21:04

I like Henry Christopher best, but I think the idea of being known by a nn of your middle name and never by either your first name or full middle name is a bit mad! For that reason I would go with Freddie.

LoveAndSqualor · 06/01/2013 21:08

I have a Kit! And I love it. And we haven't met any others, which is kind of nice too. I decided just to call him Kit rather than Christopher, as I'm not particularly enamoured of Christopher/Chris, and didn't want him changing to that as a teenager just to vex me!

Oh yes and kitsmummy - totally with you on the knightrider thing. I'd never watched it! Mine's named after a character in a book I loved as a child called The Bonnie Pit Laddie (which no one else IN THE WORLD has read apart from me) (seriously, no one) Grin

baskingseals · 06/01/2013 21:13

what about Christian?

i wanted Christian, with the nickname Kit for dc3 but sadly dh did not share my vision.

Kittenkatzen · 06/01/2013 21:19

Ohhh I LOVE Kit....and DH is a massive knight rider fan and he thinks its a great idea! Grin

Startail · 06/01/2013 21:38

freddie was DSIS goldfish (unhelpful)

I love Kit

schplappo · 06/01/2013 23:53

In Knight Rider it's KITT isn't it, rather than Kit? Although I guess that won't make any difference to anyone who thinks it's odd when they hear it!

Baskingseals - I think you recommended Christian to me on an earlier post when I didn't have a shortlist but said I liked Kit!
