I've recently started to like the name Martha but don't know why as something tells me it 'frumpy'. I think I've always put it in the same catergory as Gertrude and Bertha but then I really don't like either of these two names but do like Martha. So why do I like it?! Can somone tell me? Smile

It's a bit frumpy because of the Bible story in which she is the one who does the housework. But U do like it as a name.

Oh I think it's lovely! Traditional but not too unusual. I can always imagine it as a little girl name because of The Sound of Music Hmm but can be a grown up name too. DH isn't keen sadly but it would definitely be on my list!

I love it; it would be on my list for a girl but then I love 'old' names. It is in the same vein as Edith (Edie), Beatrice, Hattie etc., all of which I love.

I don't think it is frumpy like Gertrude or Bertha - which both conjure up images of large matronly women!

I don't like it but given its popularity I have thought about why.

Realised its because I didn't like the character Martha in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers when I was a child Grin

It's much prettier than Bertha!

Yes there is a meek and mild housework connotation but how many people would perceive that? I like it and would place it with nice old-fashioned names like Esther, Lucy, Anna and the names Surrey mentions.

I know at least three under two. Love it!

Martha is lovely. I would grade it with Violet and Elizabeth. Classic and pretty.

Martha, Bertha and even Samantha have a similar feel imo. What matters is whether YOU love either name, not us! If you love Martha, use it!!

forgetmenots · 05/01/2013 23:33

I love it, it's a family name for me and so I may well use it. I put it in with other names that have a vintage feel, like Betsy, Iris, Violet, Margot, Sadie... Like all of them and think it's classic and strong.

It's popular and it has desensitised you to how awful it is.
