What do you think of Job?

DPs friend has managed to convince him that "Job" is a great name for a boy (DC2 expected in June, possibly a boy). It is pronounced Jobe (like Joan, but with a 'b' at the end) and means something along the lines of "upright" or "righteous". DPs friend had it in mind for his DC4 who turned out to be a DD. DP is properly keen, but I'm not so sure. He'd certainly be the only one I'd ever met. I quite like the sound, but can't quite get my head around it visually. What do you think?

No, he had a terrible time in the bible and it reads like a career job not robe jobe

whistlestopcafe · 31/12/2012 23:27

I really don't like it. It sounds ok but you are right about the visual aspect. I would use it for a middle name.

SheilaWheeler · 31/12/2012 23:29

What about Joeby instead?

kiwigirl42 · 31/12/2012 23:30

No no no! Read the Book of Job in the Bible first!

CuddlyBlanket · 31/12/2012 23:30

Joeby is nice.

orangepudding · 31/12/2012 23:34

Reminds me of development!

orangepudding · 31/12/2012 23:35

Whoops arrested development!

NinjaChipmunk · 31/12/2012 23:36

orange I totally agree. didn't they spell it gob though?

MikeLitorisHasChristmasLights · 31/12/2012 23:36

I know a joab.

It really suits him.

Snazzynewyear · 31/12/2012 23:39

No no no. Google 'book of Job' and read a summary of the person of this name in the Bible.

BaileyBillyBooBoo · 31/12/2012 23:47

I like it but it can also be spelled Joab which to me is a much better spelling and seems to make more sense!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2012 23:49

Dear God, no. Just awful.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 31/12/2012 23:49

No. Apart from anything else, everyone will always pronounce it wrongly.

Rhianna1980 · 31/12/2012 23:51

If u Want him to be bullied at school ... "Job" done!

ILoveSaladReallyIDo · 31/12/2012 23:52

nnnnope

LynetteScavo · 31/12/2012 23:53

I think lots of people will read "job" rather than "jobe".

How about Jonah or Jonas?

KentuckyFriedChildren · 01/01/2013 00:02

um he'd be called a jobby Sad At least, thats what I thought of first.

lolalotta · 01/01/2013 07:08

No, awful.

FergusSingsTheBlues · 01/01/2013 07:10

Jobby! No!!!

peacefuleasyfeeling · 01/01/2013 08:45

Hee hee, that's done it. I'm glad I asked, and I will go and read up on The Book of Job. I thought I'd get it "checked out" in the moment before it took a firmer hold, as it were. Now the excitement of New Year's Eve is over, he might look at it more sensibly. Thank you all! And A Happy New Year!

Hello - do you know that JOAD is a name? You might like it instead of Job.

delilah88 · 01/01/2013 10:55

Pronounced >Jode

badtime · 01/01/2013 11:04

The Hebrew name that Job is a version of is 'Yoav' (pronounced yo-av). It's better than calling your child Jobbie.

peanutMD · 01/01/2013 11:16

If you ever intend on moving to or visiting Scotland I beg you not to call your child Joeby as this term is used quite often in place of Jobby... and Joad (pronounced like Toad) seems to be a slang word ATM for a scrotum Hmm:o

Glad you are having a rethink OP.
