What do we think of Elliott?

I am really hoping this DC2 is a girl because I cannot find a boy's name that I love and that my DH will agree to. I love Arthur but he is not sold on it. I also adore Edward but again he doesn't love it. Other options are Hugo or Felix but I am just not sure if they are right?

I proposed Elliott this morning and he quite liked that. The other one my Mum suggested was Hector but I don't think that is for me. I love it but it's a little harsh for my taste.

However, Elliott is softer but still a little old-fashioned. DS1 is George.

We find out in a week whether it's a boy or girl and perhaps this will be moot.

FYI - it's a girl, we think we will settle on Laura.

This is what I always think of when I hear the name Elliott, John Cusack in The Sure Thing.

I like Elliott, although my first thought with your ds1 was the author George Eliot which wouldn't bother me but just thought i'd point it out in case you were bothered

I like the name but think I would spell it Elliot for a first name, the 2 ts makes it sounds more surnamey. Love Laura for a girl.

It always seems a bit wet to me. No real reason, I think the little boy in ET just annoyed me!

I love Elliot, actually I think all your choices are lovely. Of course you can have a George and an Elliott.

I looked after two little children at the same time - one a boy called Elliot and one a girl called Eliotte. The problem I had is when you are talking to a baby or toddler all day it gets a bit tiresome and feels a bit formal saying a three syllable name every time you talk to them so you naturally end up shortening it. And I couldn't find a suitable shortened way of saying Elliot apart from El which isn't a great name for a boy.
I'd just like to say I am not the kind of person who shortens people's names all the time, it just happens naturally. Even if you yourself are so into the name you never want to shorten it, people your child spends time with, whether it's childcarers, teachers, other children, will end up shortening at some point. It's just worth considering how that might work out.

Love it, currently top on my "if it's a boy" list. I think it's nice that it's not easy to imagine what one would be like IYSWIM.

I have 2 DD and I agree with Jasbro that 3 syllable names tend to get shortened. Mine are Jessiaca wich is normally Jessie and Abigail which is then Abbie. When picking names we did think quite hard as to what the name might be shortened to or rhyme with as once they go to school, You're never sure what other kids will do with it.

Actually have changed my mind and now wish I had thought of this, or had a mix of boys and girls, but you could have Austen and Jane or Emile and Zola or Fontane (and Theodore? was it?) and so on. Sorry I said it would be silly.

I have a Elliot it was the only boys name we could agree on, however we are now expecting another boy in march, George has come up a few times and is something we would consider, so I personally don't think the combination is silly!

We do shorten his name and he gets Elli or El quite a lot much to my in laws distaste!

Love it, it is DS3;s name but spelt with one T. We shorten it to Elz sometimes.

We have an Elliott, I think it is a gorgeous name (obviously!) nd I was inspired by E.T
We sometimes all him Elmo as a little nickname but most of the time he is just Elliott, I don't think it is a clunky name to say often.
