Perdy.......

mummabug · 06/11/2012 21:31

I have become a serial poster of baby name questions, my apologies!

Think we have pretty much decided (other names having been vetoed by DH) on Perdy. Was going to go with full name Perdita, but I just don't like it. DH has his heart set on Perdy.

So, firstly, what are your thoughts on Perdy as a name in its own right? I know it means lost, which is a bit negative but I'm not too worried about that.

(I also love the names Juno, Mila and Anouk but all have been vetoed)

Secondly, Middle names!

Perdy Matilda
Perdy Anouk
Perdy Harriet
Perdy Juno

Any other suggestions? I'm sensing I need a long middle name to go with it but brain not functioning. Thanks Mumsnetters!

I've never read any Jilly Cooper books so I associate Perdita with the abandoned daughter in Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. I do like the name but not Perdy so much and the meaning would be a deal breaker for me.

RosannaBanana · 07/11/2012 07:15

Don't really think Perdy works as a name in its own right, sorry.
Has your DH vetoed Harriet? That's great. Or how about-
Collette nn Letty?
Constance- Connie
Greta
Isis
Iris
Penelope- penny or nell?

ninjasquirrel · 07/11/2012 07:22

I assumed it would be a boy's name - sound's like a cowboy! Sorry, don't like it.

sonniebonnie · 07/11/2012 08:35

Perdita is gorgeous - feminine, classic and beautiful! Perdita also sounds lovely in other languages (e.g. German, French, Spanish etc). Nicknames could include Dita or Perdy but I wouldn't shorten at all!

But Perdy, whilst ok as a nickname for Perdita, is really not nice. It sounds like nerdy or pervy and is just not feminine at all imo (too close to Percy).

survivingautumn · 07/11/2012 12:28

I know a little Perdita - often known as Perdy. I really like Perdita and would go with that as the full name personally. If you don't like Perdita I would say choose something else entirely as to me, Perdy just isn't a name in it's own right.

Woozley · 07/11/2012 12:36

How about Percy/Perse? Like Upstairs Downstairs. Ok, she's a bit of an arse but I like the name, short for Persephone I think.

chesticles · 07/11/2012 12:43

I know a Perdita, who is mostly known as Perdi. The reason she uses the shortened version is she hates how people pronounce Perdita. Most people say Per-DEETA, with the emphasis on the deeta bit. Whereas the way she perfers her name (how her parents pronouce it I presume) is PURD -ita. A much softer sound.

sonniebonnie · 07/11/2012 13:41

I'd say PER-dita and think it is a lovely name.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/11/2012 13:53

I'm not sure Perdy works as a standalone name. Perdita is lovely though, can DH not be persuaded?

Allalonenow · 07/11/2012 13:53

I really don't like Perdy, it is too contrived, she will spend her whole life correcting its spelling and explaining that her name isn't Perdita.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/11/2012 13:54

Oopps, just clocked its you doesn't like Perdita OP

Shinyshoes1 · 07/11/2012 13:56

my cousin has a cat called purdy

Ephiny · 07/11/2012 14:00

Sorry, I don't think it works as a name in its own right. It just doesn't sound like a name to me. I would also assume it was short for Perdita.

I think some nicknames-as-full names can be OK, but for me this isn't one of them.

diddl · 07/11/2012 14:18

Sounds masculine to me tbh.

Like Perdita though-but love Juno.

MoelFammau · 07/11/2012 14:26

Perdy is great! Ignore ignore ignore!

Perdy Anouk if you want opinions on full names.

Joanna Lumley was fab - though her name was spelt Purdy, I think?

Anyway, I'm so so bored of Harriets and Elizabeths.

Lebkuchenfan · 07/11/2012 14:56

I really like the name Perdita! I'd definately use that on the b.c. so she has more options later on in life.

Kelerina · 07/11/2012 18:58

Honestly when I saw your post title I thought it was about a boys name.......Sorry don't think Perdy works. I do however LOVE your other names, Anouk in particular is lovely but I like them all, can DH be persuaded??

LynetteScavo · 07/11/2012 19:11

Perdy is fine.

Perdy Juno is best.

VolumeOfACone · 08/11/2012 11:21

I don't like it. And the pervy / nerdy thing others have mentioned hasn't helped!

kenanddreary · 08/11/2012 11:47

Please don't. Seriously not a good choice. There are so many amazing names out there. This sounds completely made up and would suit a cat best.

Please keep thinking.

mummabug · 08/11/2012 19:55

Thanks for all your feedback! I am having serious doubts myself. I am just not sure about it at all and your reactions seem mixed too!

I do really like Mila (pr Me-la) but OH and others do not. I will keep thinking.

armedtotheteeth · 08/11/2012 21:05

I like Mila and love all your middle name suggestions. Would you consider any of those as a first name?

Ephiny · 08/11/2012 21:10

I like Mila too. That's much nicer IMO.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/11/2012 22:10

I like Mila too!

NellyBluth · 09/11/2012 08:24

Mila, or Milena (pr Mee-leh-na) is lovely.
