"Old person" names are fashionable, BUT...

When I was at school, there were three Gillians in my class and three Alisons! You can guess how old I am from that. I suspect that if anyone had turned up in my class with what we would have regarded as an "old man's" name, say, Archie, we would have teased the poor soul relentlessly. However, these names are all over the place now. BUT do you know of anyone who has taken it TOO far? My cousin has called her little boy Walter. It's a family name, but I think it's just TOO old-fashioned!

My grandparents had about ten brothers and sisters each. Now when I'm at Playschool I feel like I am back there with them: Sid, stan, Lola, lily, Rae, Maisie, Sam.
I love it - nothing is too old fashioned for me!

Edith and Harold cross the line for me!

Ethel is so far over the line for me that I doubt the line is even visible.

I know a 2 year old Cyril. I think he's named after his grandfather, but still...

I love all the Granny names tbh. The only ones that would be too much for me would be Hilda,Gladys and Edna. Sad really as they are my Aunts' names. I like Walter but like Stanley better tbh.

Ds has a friend called Cyril his official name is David but Cyril is a family name. Even now at 23 he chooses to call himself Cyril rather than David.

Mildred, Gloria, Mabel, Edna, Martha, Doris are in my own opinion dreadful names for children.

Walter is sooooo old! As is Ernest / Ernie, Bill, Clive and Geoffrey.

Apologies if anyone's little darlings have these names, not meaning to offend!

I think names have a 90 year cycle.

I was surprised to hear Susan mentioned in Downton Abbey.

Thing is, if you don't like the 'old fashioned' names it might be because you're out of fashion. Middle aged.

I love old names. I wanted Gladys for DD (my nan's name), also had Walter on the list for a boy because it's a family name. Nothing wrong with having a little Wal or Walt toddling around! We settled on Deborah.

Names I find tough to like are the Savannah / Tiffany type. Just don't do it for me!

Hey! My late mun is one of those 'awful' names! I also know a Vera in her 30s (from Latvia - the way she pronounces it is beautiful). I was at school with a Walter, a Gertrude and a Senga. Oh dear God!

Trudy was another on our list.... It's so cute!

our baby names were Edith for a girl and Harlod for a boy! had a girl! :D when we rang my middle aged MIN and told her her first Grandchild was called Edith she was not impressed!

The worst one I know is Maud and she's a really pretty little girl as well, with the ugliest name known to man.

I also know an Agnes, which is pretty awful.

I think Edith, Ethel, Enid all cross the line.

Edith, Ethel, Enid, Edna, Maud, Gladys, Harold, Walter, Doris, Mildred Yvone, Ann, Helen, Ingrid, Willy, are all terrible and I can think of more my nan used to own a residential home for the elderly.

I do like old fashioned names like Rose (my dd middle name after my great nan's middle name, her name was Vera but I didn't like that) Ivy again IMO is nice. I like flowery names.

For you maybe, what about Maud, Diesel, Tai-Reese and Gladys? And the teacher who has to do the register with a straight face?

I am obviously not trendy...I hate the a lot of old fashioned names that pop up on here.....Tabitha, Gladys, Walter, Arthur, Alberta, Florence, Martha, Margaret. Just not my cup of tea but to each their own.

I'm so glad others are with me on this! I despair when I venture onto these Baby Names threads from all the 'granny chic' names. I hate Maud, Enid, Edna, Edith, Gladys, Doris, Mabel, Agatha, Albert, Archie, Walter, Sydney, Cyril (wth!), Stanley et al.... there are more I'm sure.....

Neither do I like the Mercedes/Tiffany type names for the record.

I definitely wouldn't have liked to have been named after my gran - she was called Bertha!

I no longer think of Tabitha and Martha as old lady names! (I would love to have a Martha, but DH says NO)

A friend of mine loved the name Walter, but her DS is called Oswald, which I think is way cooler.

I once heard a dad calling his DS Ernie when out shopping. - love most of the old peoples names, it's the next generation I'm not keen on - Joyce, Irene, Brenda, Gordon, ect that I'm not keen on.

And then you get the generation after that - Kevin, Gary, Karen, Dawn. All the names my great grandchildren will probably be called and I will tut and roll my eyes in disgust as I sit in my nursing home.

What do you think of Nora? It's DH's late aunt's name and we're considering it (along with a couple of other names) and some days I really like it but others I worry about what she will think/feel about it growing up!
