Aurelia - how does one pronounce it?

I love the name Aurelia but it seems to be one of those names like Clara, where everyone seems to think it's pronounced a different way.

So do you say
Or-ee-lee-ah
Or-el-yah
Or-rayl-yah

Also on Clara,
Klah-ra
Claire-ah

I seem to like names that can be said various different ways! But would like to have a vaguely unanimous verdict. More for Aurelia than Clara because of the whole Nutcracker thing it is Klah-ra to me.

I would pronounce it as Or-ray-lee-ah.

It's a pretty name, by the way!

Wetthemogwai · 25/10/2012 12:24

Me too Sheila

Wetthemogwai · 25/10/2012 12:24

I love the name btw, it's beautiful

Isandri · 25/10/2012 12:25

Or-row-lee-ah or Or-raw-lee-ah

Faverolles · 25/10/2012 12:26

I would say it Ow-ray-lee-a

imustbepatient · 25/10/2012 12:30

As per sheila's post for me too.

KentuckyFriedChildren · 25/10/2012 12:32

i have a friend from italy pn ow-rel-lee-ya so thats what i would say

FreckledLeopard · 25/10/2012 12:33

I have a friend who's an Aurelia. In general, the first part of her name is shortened slightly, so that people call her 'uh-ray-lee-ah' or perhaps o'ray-le-ah.

Conflugenglugen · 25/10/2012 12:35

or-RAY-lee-uh (emphasis on second syllable. or is that em-PHA-sis on second sy-LLAB-le?) :)

EdithWeston · 25/10/2012 12:37

I'd say it Or-ee-li-ya and have also come across Or-ay-li-ya.

Clara is claire-a to me, but clar-ra is also common.

MrsKitty · 25/10/2012 12:40

Orr-ray-lee-ah

Floggingmolly · 25/10/2012 12:42

If you can't pronounce it, why would you saddle your child with it?

Skivvytomany · 25/10/2012 12:43

O-ray-lay-ah

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/10/2012 12:45

FloggingMolly I CAN pronounce it. As you can see,it can be said in various ways.

I was asking how other people said it. Thanks for the helpful response though.

lovely name. I would pronounce ir Or Ray Lee Ah. I really liked Aurelian when I was having the DS's but it was a bit OTT even for me. The female version is better I think.

And Clara is Clar - Ra to me

lljkk · 25/10/2012 12:53

Ow-RAY-lee-uh.
Spanish pronunciation, I guess.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/10/2012 12:53

Think Or-ray-lee-ah is the most common. Handy!
I know what you mean Funny,it is one of those names where the feminine form is better!

The third of my examples was meant to be Or-ray-lee-ah but iPhone typing is not my forte, didn't even notice until now!

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/10/2012 12:56

*most common not withstanding Spanish/Italian pronounciations. But it seems to be most similar to it.

SamSmalaidh · 25/10/2012 12:58

I would say Or-ray-lee-ah but most not English speakers seem to go for Ow-ray-lee-ah.
